Description

The Gaylord Gauntlet 5k Trail and Obstacle Run is an annual race held on the Wallingford, CT 400-acre campus of Gaylord Specialty Healthcare, a 137-bed long-term acute care hospital with services for people who experience a life-changing injury or illness. The event is a cornerstone fundraiser of the Hospital, raising funds to benefit the Gaylord Sports Association, a group dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with physical disabilities through adaptive sports and recreation.

The Gauntlet course is a blend of wooden trail and open field running with 24 natural and manmade obstacles. The entire event is coordinated and built by Gaylord Hospital staff & volunteers and includes a Festival Area with local vendors, live music, and food trucks.

The Gaylord Gauntlet is a community event. Runners of all abilities are encouraged to participate.

Volunteer Information

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the Gaylord Gauntlet!

Volunteers are integral to the successful running of the Gaylord Gauntlet as we need approximately 150 volunteers to help make this event possible!  Volunteering for this event is FUN and REWARDING! First and foremost, you will be helping to support adaptive athletes like Jay and Jillian get involved in adaptive sports like obstacle racing!  Second, you will get to cheer on almost 1,000 runners who are challenging themselves to complete this 5K obstacle run, including adaptive athletes! Volunteers help us to maintain a safe course and fun atmosphere throughout the event. All volunteers will receive a ticket for a free beverage at the end of their volunteer shift (beer or Gatorade).  We will also provide a bag lunch and a volunteer T-shirt.

Here is some information about the event and the volunteer roles:

  • The event will be held from 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM.  The first running wave will kick off at 8:00 am and the last wave will start at 1:00 pm.
  •  Volunteer time slots are (1) All Day, 7:00 AM-3:00 PM, (2) Half Day 7:00 AM-11:00 AM, and (3) Half Day 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
  • If you are also running the race, we can usually work within your availability if you would also like to volunteer.
  • Volunteer roles include: Obstacle volunteer (the most volunteers are needed in this role), registration area, festival area, race start/finish line, and the medical tent (for qualified volunteers).
  • Obstacle volunteers are our eyes out on the course and help us to respond to any safety or medical concerns, direct runners in the proper and safe use of the obstacles, and provide a fun, encouraging environment for the runners.
  • Please be sure to let us know if you have any physical limitations or other requests, and we will consider this when we assign volunteer roles (there is a place on the volunteer form for this).
  •  Also, please indicate on the form if you are part of a volunteer group and/or if there is another volunteer you would like to be paired with.
