Be A Light Project:
In 2024, we partnered with NAMI Dubuque to create the first-ever ‘Be A Light’ 5K Mental Health Awareness Fun Run. The event aims to educate the community about mental health and introduce accessible mental health resources to the local community. Rural Americans face higher rates of depression and suicide compared to urban residents, making community outreach projects critical. These projects bridge gaps in services and education, helping rural residents improve their quality of life.
Our Mission:
The Be A Light Project is dedicated to raising mental health awareness. We support Iowans living in rural areas on their mental health journey by providing opportunities to learn about and connect with mental health resources through community outreach projects and partnerships. This year, we are excited to partner with the I’m Glad You Stayed Project (IGYSP), a federally recognized non-profit organization focused on real-time suicide prevention actions, especially for teenagers. IGYSP plays a vital role in the community promoting mental health and suicide prevention by offering free resources like wristbands, stickers, and pamphlets that provide crucial support information, including the 988 suicide and crisis lifeline number. Additionally, the project offers free QPR training both in-person and via Zoom, equipping individuals with the skills needed to assist friends and loved ones who may be struggling with suicidal thoughts. Through these initiatives, the project aims to save lives.
Proceeds:
Funds raised from this event will support NAMI's host site in Epworth and will enhance our new partnership with the I'm Glad you Stayed Project by offering free QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) suicide prevention training in Farley throughout the year. Further details and new initiatives from both organizations will be announced at the event!
