2020 RACE POSTPONED  - Please read the following message from the Race Committee

In light of recommendations from MSU, the state of Michigan, and the CDC to avoid gatherings of 100+ individuals, we have decided to postpone Tower Guard’s Shamrock 5K. Thus, the race will not be held Saturday, March 14th 2020. Thank you so much to all of you for your desire to participate in this event and contribute to Tower Guard and the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities’ efforts to make MSU more accessible. 

Our current goal is to host the 20th Shamrock 5K this coming summer. Since experts do not yet have estimates for how long this public health issue will last (thus how long we will be advised to avoid large gatherings), we cannot confidently set a date for this run at this moment. We will continue to follow the advice of public health officials and our university as we look to set a new date to host this event. We appreciate your flexibility as we try to navigate this situation.

We will notify you in the coming months regarding the status of our event. Registering for the March 14th Shamrock 5K will automatically grant you registration to the rescheduled future Shamrock 5K. 

Should the recommendation to avoid gatherings persists until fall of 2020, we may discuss canceling the run, but that looks unlikely at this point in time and we will work diligently to make sure that we are able to put on a Shamrock 5K!

2020 RACE Resumed Virtually!  - Please read the following message from the Race Committee

Thank you all so much for your patience and understanding as we navigate through this unique time that we find ourselves in. Your support for MSU’s RCPD and for this event despite hardship is truly inspiring. We promised that we would do our best to ensure that the 20th Annual Shamrock 5k Walk, Run, Roll would be rescheduled, and we have exciting news! In light of prevention measures implemented by the State of Michigan, Ingham County, and Michigan State University, we are pleased to announce that we will resume the Shamrock 5K as a virtual event.

We are very excited to use an online platform to hold our event in a safe and accessible manner that will still allow us to extend our support to the RCPD. We hope that you are excited, too! To officially participate in the 2020 Shamrock 5k, there will be a one week period (Jun 28 - Jul 4) where you will be able to complete a 5k at any location you wish.

Leading up to the event, we will be distributing packets, which include your Shamrock 5K t-shirts, from 10 AM - 2 PM on the following dates:

  • Saturday, June 13
  • Saturday, June 20
  • Sunday, June 28

In an effort to keep this process safe for racers and volunteers, we will be holding a socially distanced packet pick-up in a drive-thru fashion.

  • Volunteers will be stationed in the flat lot behind Bessey Hall (434 Farm Ln, East Lansing, MI 48824) where you can drive up and be handed your race materials
  • Please wear an appropriate face mask and stay in your vehicle
  • Volunteers will wear gloves and face masks for mutual prevention measures

Out of consideration for our volunteers, please do not come to our pickup if you have had exposure to the coronavirus in the past fourteen days or if you currently have symptoms of COVID-19. Please maintain our social distancing protocols and be respectful to the health of our Tower Guard members.
We will provide more specific details on how to participate in this event as we get closer to June 28th, but we wanted to let you know the dates that had been set as soon as possible. Tower Guard


The Tower Guard class of 2000 founded the Shamrock 5k Run – Walk – Roll as an annual event to raise funds for the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities. This year we carry on the tradition and are hosting the 20th Annual Shamrock 5k on March 14, 2020 at 10:00 am at the MSU Auditorium, located on the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing, Michigan.

Tower Guard is a sophomore honor society dedicated to assisting students with disabilities at Michigan State University by reading and transcribing textbooks and exams, assisting with class and laboratory work, and providing campus orientation, among many other things. We volunteer under the direction of the RCPD, which functions to provide technical assistance, auxiliary services, and training to our volunteers and students with disabilities.

Family pricing available - Sign up 3 or more people from the same household, at the same time, and save $3 per participant.  (not valid for MSU Students)

We hope this race will be the biggest and best Shamrock 5K yet! The 5K committee has been hard at work organizing the details that will make the atmosphere fun for participants of all ages and abilities: you can look forward to music, complimentary food and drinks, hundreds of dollars worth of raffle prizes from local businesses, and an appearance by Sparty (dependent on March Madness scheduling)! Everyone receives a Shamrock Run - Walk - Roll T-shirt and qualifies for raffle prizes just by registering for the race. Best of all, because of the awesome fundraising efforts of our committee, almost every dollar of your registration fee goes straight to the RCPD!

The race will be professionally timed by the Michigan Running Foundation. Results will be posted during the race and online at Playmakers.com.

Team Competition

Get the word out to your friends about this great race! Create a team of 10 or more people and each person will save $5 on their entry fee. AWARD for the largest team!

During registration either Create a New Team or Join an existing team. The first 9 members of the team will be refunded $5 once the 10th member joins. Members 10+ will automatically receive $5 off their registration.

Donate and SAVE!

Donate $50 and you'll get a 50% discount on your registration fee!  (50% discount valid until the price increase after March 7th and then it's a $15 discount off your entry fee, $12.50 discount for MSU Students) Donate $25 and you'll save $5 off your entry fee.

Steps how to receive a discounted entry with a donation:

1. Choose Sign Up and follow the steps to register for the race

2. You will be routed to the Donation page during registration, choose the $50 or $25 donation level

3. Your discounted entry will be reflected in the cart during checkout.

Packet Pick-Up

You are welcome to pick up your packet at Playmakers in Okemos (just 1.5 miles east of campus) on Friday, March 13th from 4 - 7 p.m. to streamline the process. We encourage local participants to take advantage of this opportunity, with the anticipation of Saturday morning being very busy. Packet pick-up is also available beginning at 9:00 a.m race day morning.

Raffle with GREAT prizes!

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the 5K committee and the generosity of local businesses, we have tons of raffle prizes to give away!  This year, you will receive a raffle ticket in your race packet. Make sure to bring them on race day! You can choose which you’d like to enter for by putting your tickets in the appropriate jar at the raffle table. If you want to increase your chances, or family members not racing would like to participate, extra raffle tickets will be available for purchase at 1 for $1, 6 for $5, 15 for $10, and 35 for $20.

Raffle prize winners will be announced during the award ceremony in 108 Bessey Hall after the race.

Remember, all the money raised from the raffle goes straight to the RCPD!

This race is endorsed by and part of the Michigan Fitness Foundation Challenge. The challenge encourages Michiganders to engage with events that promote physical activity, health and wellness. You will receive a FIT point for every endorsed event you participate in or volunteer for from January 1st until December 31st. Points earn cool swag and a chance to win a Grand Prize!
