The Tower Guard class of 2000 founded the Shamrock 5k Run – Walk – Roll as an annual event to raise funds for the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities. This year we carry on the tradition and are hosting the 17th Annual Shamrock 5k on March 26, 2017 at 12:00pm at Conrad Hall, located on the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing, Michigan.
Tower Guard is a sophomore honor society, dedicated to assisting students with disabilities at Michigan State University by reading and transcribing textbooks and exams, assisting with class and laboratory work, and providing campus orientation, among many other things. We volunteer under the direction of the RCPD, which functions to provide technical assistance, auxiliary services, and training to our volunteers and students with disabilities.
We hope this race will be the biggest and best Shamrock 5K yet! The 5K committee has been hard at work organizing the details that will make the atmosphere fun for participants of all ages and abilities: you can look forward to music, free coffee and food, hundreds of dollars worth of raffle prizes from local businesses, and an appearance by Sparty! Everyone receives a Shamrock Run - Walk - Roll T-shirt and qualifies for raffle prizes just by registering for the race. Best of all, because of the awesome fundraising efforts of our committee, almost every dollar of your registration fee goes straight to the RCPD!
As in previous years, the race will begin from Conrad Hall and follow a very similar course along the scenic, springtime Red Cedar River. This family-friendly atmosphere is going to be exciting for people of all ages, and we welcome family/friends wishing to spectate. The more people cheering and dancing with Sparty, the better! Please note that Sparty will be at the race from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., so plan your photo ops accordingly!
Be prepared for this to be a big event – we’re hoping to have over 500 participants this year – and the more the merrier! On-site registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. for an extra $5 fee, although T-shirts are not guaranteed (but we should have plenty!). Packet pick-up is also available beginning at 9:30 a.m.
This year, you will receive three raffle tickets in your race packet. Make sure to bring them on race day and fill them out with your name! Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the 5K committee and the generosity of local businesses, we have tons of raffle prizes to give away! You can choose which you’d like to enter for by putting your tickets in the appropriate jar at the raffle table. To give you a taste for a few of the things we’ll be raffling off: $100 of Ukai Sushi gift cards, a free night’s stay at Quality Inn in Okemos, Espresso Royale Coffee and Mugs, $60 in Wingz gift cards, $25 Claddash Irish Pub and Peanut Barrel gift cards, NCG Cinemas Movie Passes, and so much more! If you want to increase your chances, or family members not racing would like to participate, extra raffle tickets will be available for purchase at 1 for $1, 6 for $5, 15 for $10, and 35 for $20. Remember, all the money raised from the raffle goes straight to the RCPD! We will also provide post-race snacks and water for all participants, including bananas, Clif bars, and Starbucks Coffee!
We will be holding an award ceremony inside Conrad’s main lecture hall around 1:30 p.m. or as early as possible, once all participants have finished the race and results have been tabulated. The overall first place male and female participants will receive a $50 Foods for Living Gift Card. Additionally, medals will be given to the top two participants in each age group for each gender (0-14, 15-19, 20-24, etc.) in the run/walk and the top wheelchair participants. We will also be announcing the raffle prize winners at this time.
Lot 91 at Michigan State will be available for parking on Sunday morning. It is located at the corner of Service Road and Hagadorn Road, just south of the train tracks and west of Hannah Plaza. It's a large parking lot and just a five-minute walk from Conrad Hall. Please, do not try parking in the loop in front of Conrad. That space must be clear during the duration of the event.
The average temperature on March 26th is 48 degrees. Though it’s too early to predict the exact weather, it should be great for a spring run! Even if it’s not - rain, sleet, snow, or shine, we're running! Don't let the weather scare you away!
We look forward to seeing you at the 17th Annual Shamrock 5K!
You are welcome to pick up your packet at Playmakers in Okemos (just 1.5 miles east of campus) on Thursday, March 23rd from 5-8 p.m. streamline the process. We encourage local participants to take advantage of this opportunity, with the anticipation of Sunday morning being very busy.
