ABOUT LAKE WACCAMAW STATE PARK
Lake Waccamaw is an 2,938-acre enigma, the oldest lake in North Carolina and the second-largest lake in the state. You will determine how you think the lake was formed according to who you talk to.
Before European settlers arrived, the Waccamaw-Siouan Native American Tribe had a couple of theories. One of the prominent Native American theories was that a ball of fire fell from the sky and dropped upon the most beautiful and serene garden space belonging to the people settled there. The Native Americans believe the ball of fire was sent to take the garden away because they had begun to take the beauty for granted.
Another Native American legend tells of a love-stricken warrior who was denied marriage by a Native American princess who wanted to stay in her beautiful garden forever (Lake Waccamaw sits there now) and never get married. The legend tells the warrior was so enraged by her denial that he killed all the village men. Afterward, the princess knelt and asked to die in the garden and for the garden to be instantly turned into a beautiful lake whose waters would never run dry.
Scientists believe the lake is one of the landforms in the southeast region known as 'Carolina Bays.' Thousands of the 'bays' are on North Carolina's coast; Lake Waccamaw is the largest.
The Lake Waccamaw State Park is the perfect way to explore the oldest lake in North Carolina. You'll find boardwalks, trails, primitive camping, and more! The Park's trails contrast dry and wet, with sand, mud, and green mix. It is one of the most lovable and unique things about Lake Waccamaw.
HOW YOUR REGISTRATION MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among young people, and, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, was the tenth-leading cause of death in the nation (CDC, 2019). Every year in the U.S., more people die by suicide than in car accidents, and more suicide deaths occur than homicide and AIDS deaths combined.
We can all help prevent suicide. The 988 Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals in the United States.
For more information, visit the 988 website.
