Description
September is Hunger Action Month and in St. Lawrence County, hunger action is still needed.
GardenShare is a Canton-based non-profit organization which promotes a local food system that ensures food security for all St. Lawrence County residents. The Fight Hunger Fair & 5K is a new combined GardenShare event, bringing together the presentation of the 2023 Growing Community Award, Hunger Action Month activities, and GardenShare’s annual Fight Hunger 5K.
This will be a fun and family-friendly community event to bring awareness of food justice work in St. Lawrence County. Before, during and after the 5K run/walk, there will be educational games and activities centered around food system awareness; a story walk, radish toss, etc., and live music, as well as tabling of community partners who strive to alleviate local hunger and food insecurity. Want more information on the Fight Hunger Fair? Visit GardenShare for a full Fight Hunger Fair overview.
Your registration and participation helps support GardenShare’s mission of increasing access to healthy, nutritious local food for our North Country neighbors. Sign up today to Fight Hunger, and consider maximizing your impact by asking family, friends, and co-workers to sponsor your participation! There will be a grand prize for our top fundraiser!

5K Route
The 5K will start out at the Village Park fountain and head out of the park, heading East on E Main Street. Participants will make a right onto Romoda Drive onto St. Lawrence's campus, followed by a left onto Laurentian Way. They will then make a left onto the gravel-lined Saddlemire Trail/Avenue of the Elms and do an out and back as far as the gravel goes. Next participants make a right back onto Laurentian and then a left onto Romoda. Romoda curves to the right, ending at University Avenue. Participants will use the crosswalk to cross University, making a left onto University. They will then make a right onto Park Street and then continue on Park back to the corner of the Village Park and will wind back around the park to finish at the fountain where they started.
Veggie Adventure Run
New for 2023, the Veggie Adventure Run will feature engaging and educational activities along the one-mile course, geared towards children and families. A few activities include the Pollinator Party station, where children will learn about bees; and the Overgrown Garden obstacle course, where participants will hop like bunnies, crawl like worms, and dig for veggies. Race to the end or go at your own pace, all while learning about the full cycle of fresh produce, from seed to table. You will even get to take some veggies home with you! This one-mile event will depart from the Canton Village Park shortly after the start of the 5k race.
