The Mixed Team Relay is a fast, short-format triathlon where teams of four athletes (2 men + 2 women) each complete a minitriathlon before tagging the next teammate.
Each athlete completes:
Swim: 330 yrds (300m) (The water is only 3’ - 5' deep and so you can stand up)
Bike: 3.0 Miles (4.8 km) (2 loops)
Run: 0.6 miles (1 km) (1 and half)
Then tags the next athlete.
The run is an out and back along the north path and then a small half loop back into the relay zone or finish line)
What is the order?
Woman → Man → Woman → Man.
-
- The relay zone starts 15m before the finish line and you may tag at any point within this area.
- The incoming athlete must physically touch your team mate (tagging)
- Tag occurs in a designated relay zone. (Approx 15 meters long (49 feet)
- Next athlete cannot start the swim until tagged
- The athelete who has just finished, must cross the finish line for there splits. (So keep running after you tag your team mate)
- False Starts = Time Added (30 secs)
- Do not swap chips.

Participants are expected to maintain appropriate conduct and respect for others throughout the event. The following guidelines ensure a comfortable and professional environment:
- Public areas require modest behavior
- Full nudity is strictly prohibited
- Clothing changes must be done discreetly
- There are no designated changing tents provided, plan accordingly.
Important: Inappropriate public behavior, including nudity or public urination, will result in immediate disqualification from the event. Participants must be considerate of fellow athletes, staff, spectators, and the surrounding community.
We kindly request that participants maintain appropriate attire throughout the event. While USAT guidelines may allow certain clothing options, we ask that you keep your racing kit zipped at least at the bottom and wear appropriate coverage to ensure community standards are respected. Complaints about attire could potentially impact future race permits and event sustainability.
We encourage all participants to race in the category and gender identity with which they identify, while also respecting the spirit of fair and competitive sport under current Triathlon guidelines.
This event is intended to celebrate teamwork, participation, community, and fun on the shores of Seneca Lake.
Our goal is simple:
- Create an environment where people feel welcome,
- Race hard,
- Support teammates,
- And have fun together
If any athlete or team has questions regarding team participation categories, we will work out an inclusive and reasonable solution.
As a first-of-its-kind grassroots event, we recognize that the sport and its language continue to evolve and we may not always have every answer. Traditional Olympic and USAT Mixed Team Relay formats are currently very rigid with the standard 2 women / 2 men structure, but part of what makes this event exciting is the opportunity to build something new, welcoming change together.
We may not yet have every perfect answer and would love people's thoughts on an Open relay:
- Any combination of athletes may participate,
- Including nonbinary athletes,
- Those who prefer not to say,
- And those with self-described gender identities.
We can act quickly and make this for 2026. (Call or text Simon - 585-233-4373)
We aim to provide an operationally and competitively inclusive solution.
