Mixed Team Relay Rules
Team Composition
-
- 4 athletes per team
- 2 women + 2 men
- Compete in a set order (Woman → Man → Woman → Man)
Race Format
-
- Each athlete competes a short distance triathlon back-to-back (not simultaneously)
- Swim 0.25-miles (400m)
- Bike 3.5-miles (5.6km)
- Run 1.25-miles (2km) for Legs 1,2,3; slightly longer run for Leg 4 to cross Finish Line extension
- Tags the next teammate by passing the timing chip within the relay zone
Relay Zone (Tagging / Timing Chip Exchange)

- The incoming athlete must physically pass the timing chip (tagging)
- Tag occurs in a designated relay zone
- Next athlete cannot start the swim until tagged
- False Starts = Time Added
- Lost Timing Chips = Disqualification
Transition Rules

- Each athlete uses same transition area
- Each athlete uses own bike and gear
- Helmets must be buckled before touching the bike
- Helmets must stay on until bike is racket
Equipment
Swim
-
- Wetsuit status determined by USAT rules on water temperatures and conditions
- Wetsuits are mandatory if water temp is between 58F-60F (14.4C-15.6C)
- Swim is cancelled if water temp falls below 58F (14.4C)
Bike
-
- One bike per athlete - No sharing
- Tri-Bikes allowed but Road Bikes preferred due to condensed course (better control and shorter turning radius)
- Bike bars must have end caps
- Approved helmets only
Run
-
- Must run in shoes; No barefoot running
Timing / Results

- Team time starts with Athlete 1
- Team finishes when Athlete 4 passes through Relay Zone and crosses the Finish Line
- The entire team’s combined time effort determines placement in awards
Placement / Awards

- Age Groups determined by average of team age within a 10-year grouping
- Age Groups are as follows: -19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+
- Age Group example: Team 1 ages are 20, 25, 30, 35 = 110 total, 110 / 4 = 27.5, team is grouped in AG 20-29
Penalties
Time-Added: Varies based on level rules infraction

- Early takeoff before tag (timing chip exchange)
- Mount/dismount violations
- Minor equipment infractions
Disqualification:

- Lost Timing Chips
- Course Cutting
- Headphones
- Poor Sportsmanship toward anyone
- Athlete endangerment
