Description

Everyone knows New York is the best running state in the country. However, which is the best running community IN New York State? This first-of-its-kind virtual challenge will finally answer that question. Squad up with a team or run solo while representing your region. The region with the most accumulated mileage wins bragging rights and title of "best running community in New York State", at least until 2021...The best part of all of this? 100% of donations and a portion of net proceeds will benefit United Way chapters across New York State as the carry on much needed programming in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

Every runner will receive a high-performance, long-sleeve, lightweight Empire State Race-Off running shirt/hoodie, customized with the runner's region as well as the opportunity a medal with magnet and bottle opener, both delivered at the end of the challenge.

Of course, runners from across the country and the world are welcome and encouraged to join as well - just choose which New York State region you want to represent. Maybe that's where you're from or your family resides or maybe you're just a Bills fan (strange things happen). Whatever your reason for participating, keep in mind that this is a friendly competition that aims to get people up and moving throughout the most beautiful season and best running conditions the Northeast has to offer.

Generous discount opportunities are available including a referral program that rewards runners up to $25 back for inviting their friends to join. There is an additional discount for all members of teams with over 10 runners.

Objective

The goal of the Empire State Challenge is three-fold:

2) Engage runners, walkers and hikers across New York State and the country to get up, get active and have during the beautiful fall season.

3) Raise funds for United Way’s across New York State to help them continue their important work in the face of challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic.

    • It does not matter how you accumulate your mileage as long as you use you are putting foot to ground*. For example:
    • Running, walking and even hiking mileage is all allowed.
    • Biking, swimming, rowing mileage is not valid.
    • *One exception exists for wheelchair athletes who are allowed to accrue mileage using their chairs.

    • You may select any region you’d like.
    • Don’t worry, you can’t hurt your region’s score by not accumulating mileage. You can only help!
  • The regional leaderboard will be updated on Wednesday morning of each week. This is how you can tell which regions are crushing it and which ones need to step up their game!
  • In addition to the regional leaderboard, there will be an individual leaderboard and a team leaderboard for sub-teams that will be updated in real-time as mileage is reported.
  • Sub-teams are encouraged and are separate from your overall, regional team.
