The Westerville Lions Rudolph Run/Walk 5K is a family-encouraged 5K event which typically kicks off the Westerville Lions Children’s Christmas Parade in early December. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's 5K Run/Walk is going virtual! The parade itself has been cancelled with plans to resume in December of 2021. With this year's race moving to a virtual capacity, there will be no Elementary School Challenge this year.
The Rudolph 5K Run/Walk will generate funds to benefit Westerville area organizations including:
Our 46,000 clubs and 1.4+ million members make us the world's largest service club organization. We're also one of the most effective. Our members do whatever is needed to help their local communities.
The Westerville Lions Club was founded in 1928 as the community’s first service club. It is comprised of local men and women who individually and jointly volunteer their time to provide service to the Westerville community. All profits from any Lion event will go toward Lions charitable organizations that will fight the major causes of preventable and reversible blindness. None of the donated amount or activity profits will go towards the benefits of our members. Sight supported activities supported by our club include organizations that:
provide free professional glaucoma screenings and make corneal transplants possible each year
establish and support a majority of the world's eye banks, hundreds of clinics, hospitals, and eye research centers worldwide
collect millions of pairs of unwanted eyeglasses annually for free distribution to those in need in developing countries
offer screenings, eyeglasses and sports goggles to athletes through the Special Olympics-Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes Program
provide free quality eye care, eyeglasses, Braille-writers, large print texts, white canes and guide dogs for thousands of people each year
We have a select number of keepsake knitted caps printed by Rising Moon Custom Apparel that will be included in race bags with a few lucky randomly-selected registrants. Additionally, all participants will receive a pair of Christmas socks, as well as a pair of gloves with finger-tabs that allow you to text. Race bags will also include local restaurant coupons and other handouts.
You can pick up your race swag at Columbus Running Company's Westerville location (50 N State St 43081) on Friday, December 4 (10a-8p) or Saturday, December 5 (10a-6p). You can also select to have your materials shipped directly to your door. Shipping will take place on Monday, December 7.
Holiday races are always fun, and can be even more fun when participants are racing in costume. While we can't come together for a physical race this year, we encourage our participants to run or walk their own virtual race wherever they would like, dressed in reindeer antlers, Santa costumes, elves, snowmen, etc. The Westerville Lions have developed three 5K historical routes that will be posted here and on the Lions website at www.westervillelions.org when they're ready for publication. Please tag us with photos on our Facebook page. Have fun and let's show our holiday spirit!
