Josephine's Village 5K: Celebrating Loved Ones & Mending Broken Hearts

08/12/2023 Directions

Place

UVA Alumni Hall

Description

Josephine's Village was started when a very special little heart warrior was fighting for her life in UVA Medical Center's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).  Jo touched many people's hearts and a village was formed to support her as she underwent two open heart surgeries at nine weeks old and gave all she had to fight for her life.  Sadly, Josephine passed away on Christmas Day 2017 at 20-weeks old.  Her parents kept Josephine's Village alive to bring awareness to Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs), and eventually formed Josephine's Village 501(c)(3) non-profit as well as Josephine's Village 5K charity race to honor their daughter by supporting other families faced with CHDs.

Josephine's Village 5K aims to:

* Honor Josephine & all heart warriors who have passed or are fighting to live with Congenital Heart Defects

* Educate the public on CHDs, as 1 in 110 babies are born with some type of CHD and research is poorly funded

* Support babies and children with CHDs by raising funds for them and their families

* Provide a race to the community that is Fun, Family Friendly, Safe and Provides Remembrance of Loved Ones

Welcome to Josephine’s Village 5K 2023!

Josephine's Village 5K & Kids' Dash will be offered as both a VIRTUAL and IN-PERSON event again this year!  We hope you'll join us in-person, and if not, please know you can show your support from afar virtually!  Again, we are thrilled that ANYONE, from anywhere, can sign up to show their support!

Josephine's Village 5K is taking place Saturday, August 12th!  Josephine's Village 5K supports equality, kindness, fairness, and giving back!  Our race is OPEN TO ALL runners and walkers, ALL backgrounds, ALL ages, and is 100% family friendly! Babies in strollers are encouraged!  And YES, we’re planning on wearing our tutus and hope you will be, too!  If finances are keeping you from registering, please contact us at info@josephinesvillage.com and we will find a way to finance your entry!

For those joining us in-person, we will start/end at UVA Alumni Hall.  There is currently road construction at the Alderman/McCormick intersection, which has been part of our course, so we are working on creating a new route.  Stay tuned!

We are seeking sponsorships once again this year.  If you would like to be a sponsor of our charity event, we thank you!  We'll happily accept in-kind or monetary donations.  Please email info@josephinesvillage.com to learn more about our sponsorship levels and how to be listed on the back of our t-shirts and/or our website! We’re thankful for all those who have supported this cause with us the past five years!

WE HOPE YOU’LL SIGN UP, individually or as a team!!!  We’ll announce the largest group on race day!

We’re excited to see your smiling faces before and after you finish the 5K whether you join us in-person or virtually!  When posting to social media, please be sure to use the hashtags  #JosephinesVillage5K / #JV5K2023 / #JV5Kkidsdash in your posts!  You can also post your photos to our Facebook event page or tag us on Instagram @josephines_village !

As a reminder, Josephine’s Village is a 501(c)(3) non-profit.  Therefore, if you choose to make a donation of any amount, please know that it will be tax deductible!

*Important Note: Register by July 24th to be guaranteed a race t-shirt!  Also, there is an option when registering to have your t-shirt mailed!  Otherwise, we’ll email you closer to race day with the t-shirt pickup details in Charlottesville. If you register AFTER July 24th, you are not guaranteed a race t-shirt, as only a small amount of extra t-shirts in select sizes will be ordered and available on a first come basis through RunSignUp.

Course Directions & Map

Start at Alumni Hall

Straight up Lewis Mountain Rd from Alumni Hall

R on Cameron Ln

L Minor Rd

L on Alderman Rd (*cross to other sidewalk @crosswalk near Midmont Ln in front of St. Thomas Aquinas Church)

L on McCormick Rd (*use the pedestrian pathway/detour on the sidewalk alongside the McCormick construction for both the way out and the return on the course; after passing the construction on the way out, move to the other sidewalk (using the crosswalk) on McCormick Rd for the run out towards the Chapel.)

Continue on McCormick Rd; as you approach UVA Chapel you’ll turn right onto the brick path and head in towards the UVA Rotunda.  You’ll run past the Rotunda and continue down and around Brooks Hall before coming back up the brick path on the other side of Brooks Hall.

As you come to where the brick path meets the sidewalk in front of the UVA Rotunda, you’ll go left on that University Avenue sidewalk back towards the UVA Chapel.  Continue to follow the sidewalk as it wraps around the UVA Chapel and meets McCormick Rd.

As you run up McCormick, just as you pass the UVA Chapel, you’ll cross the street by using the large crosswalk there that will allow you to run back on the opposite sidewalk of McCormick than the one you ran in on (placing you on the side closest to Alderman Library).

Follow McCormick until you get to the Alderman traffic light (stay on the sidewalk/pedestrian detour path around the construction).
