Josephine's Village was started when a very special little heart warrior was fighting for her life in UVA Medical Center's PICU. Jo touched many people's hearts and a village was formed to support her as she underwent two open heart surgeries at nine weeks old and gave all she had to fight for her life. Sadly, Josephine passed away on Christmas Day 2017 at 20-weeks old. Her parents kept Josephine's Village alive to bring awareness to Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs), and eventually organized Josephine's Village 5K charity race to honor their daughter by supporting other families faced with CHDs.
Josephine's Village 5K aims to:
* Honor Josephine & all heart warriors who have passed or are fighting to live with Congenital Heart Defects
* Educate the public on CHDs, as 1 in 110 babies are born with some type of CHD and research is poorly funded
* Support babies and children with CHDs by raising funds for them and their families
* Provide a race to the community that is Fun, Family Friendly, Safe and Provides Remembrance of Loved Ones
There’s been a lot going on this year, and we are more committed than ever to helping those affected by Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs). With COVID-19 still a threat in our community, we have made the decision to move to a Virtual Race this year... ANYONE, from anywhere, can sign up to show their support! You may run/walk 3.1 miles anywhere you like! We’re sad we won’t get to see you in person this year, but that doesn’t mean we still can’t get out and move to show our support for CHD families!
Josephine's Village (VIRTUAL) 5K is taking place August 14th-16th! During a time of clear inequalities across the nation, we want to make it clear that Josephine's Village 5K condemns racism. We are committed to making sure that the money we raise is used to help all individuals because Black Lives Matter! We support equality, kindness, fairness, and giving back. Our race is OPEN TO ALL runners and walkers, ALL backgrounds, ALL ages, and is 100% family friendly! Babies in strollers are encouraged! And YES, we’re planning on wearing our tutus again this year and hope you will be too! If finances are keeping you from registering, please contact us at email@example.com and we will find a way to finance your entry!
We will have our traditional course, that starts and ends at UVA Alumni Hall, marked for those in the Charlottesville area who would like to use it. The UVA route has a gradual incline during the first mile. It then tapers into a relatively flat course with a short climb on Newcomb Road South towards the UVA Bookstore, and again on Alderman Road as you near the turn back onto Lewis Mountain Road, where you’ll find yourself on a nice downward stretch back to Alumni Hall.
We understand that many have been affected by the COVID-19 crisis, and for this reason, we will not be soliciting sponsorships this year, though we will accept any donations if someone would like to contribute to our charity event. In an effort to do what we can to give back to our community, we will be listing all past monetary sponsors on the back of our t-shirts this year, as well as past in-kind sponsors on our website. We’re thankful for all those who have supported this cause with us the past two years, and hope this gesture shows our immense gratitude.
WE HOPE YOU’LL SIGN UP, individually or as a team!!! We’ll announce the largest group on race day! Please virtually run/walk responsibly, and abide by all social distancing guidelines put in place by the CDC.
We’re excited to see how far our race reaches this year!!! And we'd love to see your smiling faces before and after you finish the 5K! When you post to social media, be sure to use the hashtags #JosephinesVillage5K / #JV5K2020 / #JV5Kvirtual in your posts! You can also post your photos to our Facebook event page or tag us on Instagram @josephines_village !
Finally, we have some BIG NEWS we’d like to share! Josephine’s Village has gained its 501(c)(3) non-profit status! Should you choose to make a donation of any amount now or in the future, please know that it will be tax deductible!
*Register by July 25th to be guaranteed a race t-shirt! There is an option when registering to have your t-shirt mailed! Otherwise, we’ll email you closer to race day with t-shirt pickup times/locations in Charlottesville. If you register AFTER July 25th, you are not guaranteed a race t-shirt, as only a small amount of extra t-shirts in select sizes will be ordered and available on a first come basis through RunSignUp.
We’re praying this pandemic ends swiftly, and look forward to seeing you IN PERSON next year for our August 2021 Josephine’s Village 5K!
