What exactly is the Run Washington Virtual Challenge? In a nutshell - runners from all over the world can run across the State of Washington "virtually" between June 20 - September 22.

We've created multiple "challenges" to keep you running and staying healthy. Each challenge has a different theme and mileage to complete. At the completion of each chosen event, participants will earn #RUNWA Swag in the form of a custom race bib, race shirt/race tank and custom challenge medal!

Each of the four separate challenges represent different iconic parts of our great state including iconic Seattle landmarks, waterways, parks and some of Washington's greatest engineering feats! With each challenge comes a separate, fully customized completion medal representing that part of the state and completed challenge.

Looking for additional SWAG? Complete all four separate challenges to complete the Run Washington Virtual Challenge. You did it! You've run the entire state! Your reward? A custom Run Washington Trucker Hat and the 5th medal - the coveted Run Washington Challenge Medal in the shape of our great state - Washington!

Register now as a solo participant or as a team of 2+ participants (your team will work together to complete the mileage goal for your challenge) and start running, walking or biking to complete your Run Washington goals!

(That's right, running walking 🏃 🏃‍♀️ and biking miles 🚴 🚴‍♀️ all count!)

Stay healthy and keep running Washington... We got this!

Seattle City Challenge - 35 miles (average 0.37 miles / day)

What's the Seattle City Challenge? During this challenge, you'll run past all of Seattle's famous landmarks. Your run will start at the base of the iconic Space Needle. From here, you’ll head north for a loop around Lake Union. Next up, you’ll pass Gas Works Park, the Fremont Troll and the Lenin Statue on your way to the Ballard Locks. After crossing the Ballard Locks we head south, running through Myrtle Edwards Park and along the Seattle Waterfront. After the Ferry Terminal you’ll continue through Pioneer Square, site of the Great Seattle Fire of 1889, before visiting the SODO neighborhood with laps around both CenturyLink Field & T-Mobile Park, homes to the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Mariners. After taking in the atmosphere of screaming fans, you’ll run north, between the tall buildings of downtown, past the Smith Tower and Columbia Tower, through Seattle’s famed Gum Wall before finishing your 35 mile tour of Seattle’s Landmarks at the world famous Pike Place Market. Grab a bite to eat and show off your hard earned medal!

Columbia River Challenge - 47 Miles (average 0.50 miles / day)

Your Columbia River Challenge could be almost anywhere in the state but for our challenge we will start at the Grand Coulee Dam, sitting on the mighty Columbia River. Within the first mile of your run, you’ll cross over the Grand Coulee Dam. Did you know there are multiple dams on the Columbia and throughout Washington, but the Grand Coulee Dam is the largest power station in the US? After crossing the dam, running southwest, you move away from the Columbia River, traveling alongside many different lakes, parks and farmland throughout Central Washington. As you continue you run south towards The Gorge Amphitheatre and the Columbia River, once again comes into view. As you approach the Gorge Amphitheatre you’ll start to hear music. In fact, it’s music from your favorite artist, playing your favorite song! As you approach, the crowds get louder, cheering as you finish your run, on stage during the biggest concert of the year!

Northwest Passage Challenge - 95 Miles (average 1.00 miles / day)

The Northwest Passage Challenge starts at the very north of Washington State, at the Canadian Border. Starting at the Peace Arch Border Crossing, you’ll begin your journey south, immediately running along the picturesque coast through Birch Bay, on your way to Bellingham. In Bellingham, you’ll zig zag through Western Washington University's campus and south through Fairhaven. From there, you’ll continue south through Chuckanut along the scenic Chuckanut Drive. You’ll continue running south, passing multiple different waterways and bays as you approach Whidbey Island, the longest island in Washington and one of the longest in the United States. Immediately as you reach Whidbey Island you’ll enter Deception Pass State Park and cross the famed Deception Pass Bridge. With over two million visitors a year, it is the most visited Washington State Park. Throughout Whidbey, as you weave your way through tranquil farmland with never-ending views of the Puget Sound and snow-capped mountains, you’ll hear the roar of US Navy Fighter Jets taking-off and landing in the near distance. You’ll complete your journey at the south end of Whidbey Island at the Clinton Ferry Terminal, which will connect you back to the mainland after running 95 miles, 57 of which are through Washington’s longest island!

Cascade Range Challenge - 100 Miles (average 1.05 miles / day)

The Cascade Range Challenge is our take on trail running. With over 64 named mountains and peaks throughout Washington, it's pretty easy to stumble upon treasured state parks and hiking/running trails throughout the different mountain ranges and valleys. While on your 100 mile challenge, picture yourself at the base of Mt. Baker, home to the world's greatest recorded snowfall in one season (1,140 inches). During the spring and summer months, this area also boasts scenic running trails including the Heliotrope Ridge Trail and Picture Lake Path. Both are "must runs" throughout the Mt. Baker National Recreation Area. Continuing south, you'll find yourself at Mt. Rainier, the tallest mountain in Washington by over 2,000 feet. Again, during the spring and summer months, you can find yourself on the 93-mile Wonderland Trail. Someone once ran the entire trail in just under 19 hours, but you have 90 days to complete your 100 miles! Finally, the last mountain on our Washington Mountain Challenge is of course Mt. St. Helens, known most for its volcanic eruption on May 18, 1980. Nowadays, wildlife and vegetation flourishes. Here you can find many trails with picturesque settings to traverse through as you complete your 100 mile Cascade Range Challenge, including the Loowit Trail, which at 50K, encompasses aspects of old growth forest, glacial stream crossings and blast zones from the 1980 eruptions.

Run Washington Challenge - 277 Miles (average 2.92 miles / day)

By taking on the Run Washington Challenge you are essentially signing up to run the equivalent of the State of Washington in just about 90 days. Why 277 miles? Aside from it being the combined distances of the four previous challenges, it is also the distance from the Canadian border to Oregon border along the I-5 corridor. By registering for the Run Washington Challenge, you will automatically be registered for the other four challenges, meaning you will not only earn medals for all four challenges you complete, you'll also earn the Run Washington Medal, only attainable by completing the full Run Washington Virtual Challenge!

HOW DO I LOG & TRACK MY MILES? (PDF Instructions at bottom of page)

You can Easily track your miles online! We have an interactive map that shows how far along the challenges you are. Tracking your mileage is super easy thanks to the awesome software from RunSignup. Once you do it a few times you'll get into the hang of it!

1. Login to RunSignup. We recommend letting it remember your username/password as you'll be here often!

2. Navigate to the Results page. We recommend bookmarking this page so you can find it quickly everyday.

3. Click "Submit Virtual Results"

4. You will be shown a calendar, select the current day or the day for which you are entering the miles.

5. A second box says "Distance in Miles", add the miles you ran that day.

6. Click "Submit your time"

Done!

RunSignup will automatically update your total distance and show you your total progression to date along the actual marathon course!

Tips and Tricks

1. It's best to enter your distance daily. Obviously life happens and you will perhaps not be able to every day, but staying consistent will make it easy so you're not having to enter a ton of data at once. Plus seeing that progression is very motivating!

2. For those of you who "double" (that is, run/walk twice or perhaps more in a day), simply total the mileage that day and submit one entry. E.g.,You run 3 miles in the morning and then another 4 that night. You should make one entry for 7 miles that day.

Once you have completed your run, wear your medal and celebrate! Share your successes with others. Send us your pics along your journey and tag us at @RunTheWestCoast #RunCali #RunOR #RunWA #RunTheWestCoast

You can track your run with any app, watch, or fitness device that you would like. Or, just remember your miles and enter them daily, weekly, monthly or when you've completed your challenge!
