Traditional cross country races feature a mass start on an extended starting line. Due to COVID-19 we have opted to split the start of the race into waves - there is no mass start. Runners that sign up and join a team will start together with their team and be assigned a wave number closer to race day. Runners that do not join a team will receive their wave assignment in an email closer to race day as well. On race day, runners are free to warm up on the property as needed and should remain socially distanced. The starter will call individual waves to the starting line beginning at 9:00 AM where teams/small groups will be sent off one at a time in a staggered format. This process allows for separation between groups and less congestion on the course. All runners will receive an official chip time.
The race will be held rain or shine.
We understand that many high school and college athletes will not have the chance to compete as a team in cross country this fall. We want to try and solve that problem by introducing a team competition! Athletes can form teams of 5 people to compete against other teams in their chosen division (middle school, high school, college, and open/mixed). Only teams in the open/mixed division can have a mix of ages and/or genders. We will score complete teams (5 people) by cumulative time (the total time it took each member of the team to complete the course).
The 5k course starts and ends in the lower grass field at Tollgate Park. Runners will run on grass through the Tollgate Park and Harford Equestrian Center properties. There are minimal stretches on paved surfaces, so spikes are acceptable. A course map will be posted shortly.
We will give out awards as follows:
We take health and safety very seriously. Based on guidance from the CDC and local health departments we have created the following operating protocols for MDXC:
The Maryland XC Series (MDXC) was created to give athletes an opportunity to compete in cross country races around the state. With the cancellation of many fall athletic seasons and open competitions, the need to bring runners of all ages and abilities together safely was evident. Charm City Run and the Live Give Run Foundation have prepared a race environment that will allow for safe and exciting racing action among individuals and runner-created teams. We hope to include 4 races in the series, and will continue to update information as additional dates and locations are confirmed. We look forward to welcoming everyone this fall!
