Due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Gorham Savings Bank Maine Marathon, Half Marathon and Marathon Relay, originally scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4, will take place virtually from Sept. 26 through Oct. 12. Title sponsor Gorham Savings Bank will cover all virtual race costs so that every entry fee dollar can be donated to nonprofit race beneficiaries.
The virtual distances can be run in any location you choose, including the actual race course. Virtual participants who live in the U.S. will get a medal and shirt mailed to them after they complete the event. Results will be compiled, but there will be no awards or cash prizes.
The virtual options are: marathon, half marathon, relay, 5K and 10K. The fee is $30/runner through Aug. 31. The fee will increase to $35 on Sept. 1.
Participants who are already registered may request that their entry be switched to one of the virtual options (These requests will be processed manually, and you won't see your new entry status until early August). Once your request to switch to the virtual race has been processed, you'll be able to go online and edit your registration, to change your virtual distance and indicate whether or not you plan to use the actual race course. Those who switch to a virtual event can choose any of the virtual distances, regardless of which event you initially registered for.
You can also request a partial refund (for the difference between your original entry fee and the reduced virtual race fee), or whether you’d like to donate the difference to charity.
You also have the option of cancelling your race registration. If you choose to do that, you may donate your entry fee to charity or request a full refund.
We ask that participants make a decision by Tuesday, Aug. 4. If you do nothing, by default, your registration will be deferred until 2021.
The Gorham Savings Bank Maine Marathon features an out-and-back course for all three races -- marathon, relay and half marathon -- with rolling hills and views of the Portland skyline, the Back Cove, Casco Bay, and peak fall foliage. The Marathon is USATF certified and a Boston Marathon qualifier. The Half Marathon is also USATF certified, and the Marathon Relay is a 2 to 4-person marathon-length event.
Make it a weekend for the whole family! Enjoy Portland’s breweries, restaurants, Old Port shopping and scenic beauty before and after your race. Your family and friends can easily access the start/finish line along beautiful Back Cove.

Alphabetical entry lists with bib numbers will be posted near the packet pickup tables. Find your bib number on one of the entry lists, then go to the appropriate packet pickup table, which will be organized by bib number. You must have an ID to pick up your packet. If you need to pick up a packet for someone else, you must have a signed note from that entrant.
Free parking is available near Sullivan Gym. The USM parking garage will be open both Saturday and Sunday, and their are several small lots nearby, as well as some street parking. The USM garage is located off Bedford St., which is the first left-hand turn off Forest Ave. after you get off Exit 6B from I-295. Because of the large number of entrants, the garage might fill up on race day, but additional parking is available nearby at the Campus Center lot, UMaine School of Law, the Back Cove lot, or the AAA lot.
Please do not park in the Hannaford shopping center lot, which is reserved for store customers. Also, we urge everyone to arrive as early as possible on race day to minimize traffic backups.
