In light of COVID infection rates reaching an all-time high in Maine, the Maine Marathon medical team (part of MaineHealth) reviewed the safety precautions of the event. They confirm that if we have the proper precautions in place, we can hold this event safely. At the request of the Maine Marathon medical team, we will require that all runners, volunteers and vendors bring an original paper copy, digital copy, photocopy or photo of their vaccination proof, or a negative COVID-19 test result taken Friday, October 1, or later.
Participants can provide this documentation at packet pickup at the expo on Saturday, October 2, and at bib pickup on Sunday, October 3.
To allow for better physical distancing along the course, the narrowed starting line will be opened for an extended period following the elite athlete start at 7:45 a.m. The rest of the field will be released without a gun start. The race will be chip timed, so your time will start once you cross the start line and age-group awards, as always, will be determined by net (chip) time. Masks should be worn at the starting line and can be removed once running has commenced.
Masks will be required at the expo. The expo will be held indoors at the University of Southern Maine gym. USM has an indoor mask mandate, and we will be enforcing that requirement. During the expo on Saturday, we will also be managing the capacity of the gym so everyone can safely physically distance while in line for bib pickup or at vendor booths. To avoid the traditional busy hours and potential lines to enter the expo, visit during the quieter hours from mid to late afternoon.
The Gorham Savings Bank Maine Marathon features an out-and-back course for all three races -- marathon, relay and half marathon -- with rolling hills and views of the Portland skyline, the Back Cove, Casco Bay, and peak fall foliage. The Marathon is USATF certified and a Boston Marathon qualifier. The Half Marathon is also USATF certified, and the Marathon Relay is a 2 to 4-person marathon-length event.
Make it a weekend for the whole family! Enjoy Portland’s breweries, restaurants, Old Port shopping and scenic beauty before and after your race. Your family and friends can easily access the start/finish line along beautiful Back Cove.

Packet pickup tables will be organized by bib number, with a separate table for relay teams. Individual participants can look up their bib number here — https://runsignup.com/Race/FindARunner/?raceId=14517. You will also receive an email the week before the race that includes your bib number and a QR code or barcode. Please bring that email with you to packet pickup, either on your smartphone or as a printout, so that volunteers can easily confirm your bib number and other information.
Relay teams can find their bib number by going to the Relay Teams page — https://runsignup.com/RaceGroups/14517. Search for your team name, click on your team name link, then click the down arrow next to Group Details. When you arrive at packet picket pickup, there will be a check-in table for relay teams only.
Participants are expected to know their bib number when they arrive. If you forget and don’t bring the message with your bib number and QR code, you can go to our Information table, and we’ll help you as soon as we can, but your packet pickup experience will go much quicker and smoother if you have your bib and QR code with you.
You must have an ID to pick up your packet. If you need to pick up a packet for someone else, you must have a signed note from that entrant.
Plan to check out the many vendors, including Athleta, plus others selling running shoes, clothing and other supplies. Throughout the expo, you will find organizations and volunteers handing out goodies and swag for your goodie bag.
Take I-295 to Exit 6B (Forest Avenue North). Take left at first light onto Bedford Street, then turn right to park at the Campus Center (Wood Rd. on the map below) and follow the signs to Sullivan Gym.
On race day, continue straight on Bedford Street to park in the USM garage on the left, or park at one of the alternate locations shown on the map — UMaine School of Law, the World Imports lot, the Back Cove lot, the Intermed parking garage (closes at 3 p.m.) or the AAA lot. Please do not park in the Hannaford shopping center lot, which is reserved for store customers.
For those of you who will be using a GPS to find your way to the race, use 35 Bedford St. to get directions to the USM Campus Center parking lot, which is adjacent to Sullivan Gym. There is also a smaller lot next to Sullivan Gym (66 or 96 Falmouth St.), but parking spaces will be hard to find. The Bedford St. address will also get you to the USM parking garage, which is the primary location for race-day parking.
Free parking is available near Sullivan Gym. The USM parking garage will be open both Saturday and Sunday. There are several USM parking lots as well as some street parking. Metered parking is free on Sunday. The USM garage is located off Bedford St., which is the first left-hand turn off Forest Ave. after you get off Exit 6B from I-295.
There is significant construction on the USM campus. USM Sullivan Gym, where the expo takes place is behind the construction site on Bedford Street. One must go completely around the construction site in either direction to find the gym.
Please do not park in the Hannaford shopping center lot, which is reserved for store customers. Also, we urge everyone to arrive as early as possible on race day to minimize traffic backups. NOTE: Please arrive early on race day to minimize traffic backups.

Runners who have achieved the standards listed below since Oct. 1, 2018, can receive a comp race entry. Please email Bob Aube at email@example.com, and include a race name and date where you achieved the standard.
Men: 1:15 for half marathon, 2:45 for marathon
Women: 1:25 for half marathon, 3:15 for marathon
All of our virtual events – marathon, half marathon, marathon relay, 10K and 5K – are open from Saturday, Sept. 25, through Monday, Oct. 11. You can complete your event any time during that time period, at any location.
If you use RaceJoy, your virtual result should automatically be uploaded to RunSignUp.com after you finish. Otherwise, you can manually submit your result. Go to the Results page, hit Submit Virtual Result, look up your registration, and hit Submit Virtual Result again. Please note that results will only be accepted from Sept. 25 through Oct. 11.
