New Date: September 20, 2020
Even though Montana and Flathead County have seen a significant drop in new COVID-19 cases, the probability that county officials and the governor will allow for public events like the Herron Half Marathon/10k/5k trail race by June 7th is very small. We have decided to move the race to the same day as the Foy's to Blacktail Trail Marathon on September 20, 2020!
We hope you will join us to support Foy's to Blacktail Trails Organization and to make this a fun and full day of trail racing for all levels and abilities!
Herron Half/10k/5k participants:
We are canceling our events on September 20, 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns. Flathead County Parks will issue permits for Herron Park once Montana is in phase 3, and those decisions are still a month away. With the recent uptick in cases both locally and state wide, this is a difficult decision that we cannot put off any longer.
All participants can choose to move their registration to next year (2021) for free or get a refund for this year, less 6% Run Sign Up processing fees.
Foy’s to Blacktail Trails would still like to offer trail users a way to get out and enjoy. We will flag the 5k/10k/Half Marathon courses this fall so you can explore the courses on your own. The courses will be marked on Saturday, September 12 and will stay up until the end of the day on Sunday, September 20: green for the 5k, red for the 10k and blue for the Half Marathon. Whether you’re a local or traveling to see SW Montana, Herron Park can be a complicated place! While the main trails are well marked, we have linked together a network of trails to create each course. Please see maps on the race webpage for details: https://www.ftbtraces.com/herron-half-marathon-10k-5k.
The 5k climbs the Notch trail, turns before it gets steep and crosses over to the Horse trail via Scary Stump. The final stretch down Horse/Family trails is shared by the other courses. The 10k takes you a bit higher up the steep stuff, then through the many layers of Overlook, Boundary, Chase, and logging road. The Half Marathon provides the best views- but is also the toughest course, utilizing new and old pieces of the Foy’s to Blacktail Trail. Trail runners and hikers have been enjoying this event for many years, and we hope this will encourage folks to get out this fall to create their own personal event.
These races are our largest annual fundraisers. We’ve kept registration fees low over the last 9 years to keep the events affordable. The money raised from the races goes directly to building and maintaining trails in the 34-mile FTBT system. In addition to event fees, our trails thrive largely in part to our dedicated sponsors. FTBT would like to recognize the following sponsors for their financial contributions in 2020 and many years prior:
Step Ahead Foot & Ankle Clinic
Advanced Rehabilitation Services
Jordahl & Sliter
Youth With A Mission—Endurance Adventures
Kalispell Regional Healthcare
Rocky Mountain Outfitter
Trailhead Realty Group
Chuck Olson Real Estate
Glacier Centre for Dentistry
Sportsman & Ski Haus
We would also like to thank our volunteer partners. Hundreds of hours of time and thousands of dollars have helped to maintain this trail system:
Applied Materials Foundation
Recreational Equipment, Inc.
Kalispell Daybreak Rotary
Montana Conservation Corps
Montana State Parks
Flathead National Forest
American Forest Management
Herron Park Equestrians
Flathead County Parks
Please send us an email if you end up running any (or ALL) of the courses during that week. We need to know if our efforts of marking the courses were worthwhile!
