ABOUT TOGETHER WE STAND NC

On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner was killed in the New York City borough of Staten Island after Daniel Pantaleo, a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer, put him in a prohibited chokehold while arresting him. Garner’s last words were “I can’t breathe.”

Six years later, we founded Together We Stand NC (TWS-NC) in July 2020 after the senseless and malicious killing of Ahmaud Arbery in February 2020 in Brunswick, Georgia.

TWC-NC is a movement supporting peaceful demonstration and honest, unfiltered conversations to heighten awareness of systemic racism and injustice to communities of color. Given the recent killings of yet more unarmed Black and Latino Americans, the continued importance of community, unity, and conversation is clear.

On February 23, 2021 we hosted a virtual event, Maud 2.23, as a tribute to Ahmaud Arbery.  The Maud 2.23 event raised $4767.83 for the Durham People’s Alliance, a local organization that is focused on improving and creating a just and equitable society in Durham.

Maud 2.23 shirts were shipped and purchased by and represented in over 65 cities and 23 states (including Canada).  Over 400 runners/walkers participated in the Maud 2.23 Virtual run nationwide.
