Due to the increasing COVID cases in our area, worsening metrics, and tightening of restrictions, we have reevaluated the best format for this event in our current health climate. Gathering in large groups to run a race runs contrary to the community goal of reducing crowds and viral spread at this time. Thus, we are altering plans for an in-person race. However, we want to honor the spirit of this event at the start of the new year on the beautiful, frosty Salem Lake course.
The Salem Lakeshore Frosty Fifty 50k and 25k are going to be run as modified virtual self timed runs. Runners can run the official courses on either Saturday, January 2, or Sunday, January 3, and upload their times. Here are the ways this impacts the event:
This website will be updated shortly to reflect these changes. (12/10/20)
Results can be submitted any time between 8am on January 2 and 12 midnight on January 3. You can submit online by logging into your RunSignup account.
PLEASE NOTE: The plans have changed based on the state and local COVID impact and metrics. Any additional changes, which we do not forsee, will be communicated and this website will be updated.
The 2021 Salem Lakeshore Frosty Fifty 50K & 25K will be held as a modified virtual self timed runs on Saturday, January 2, 2021 and Sunday, January 3, 2021. Race registration will open on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at 8:00 am. This is a 50k and 25k around beautiful Salem Lake in the outskirts of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Registration will be capped at 400 participants total for the combined 50K and 25K races. There will not be a 50K relay this year.
Participants are required to wear a mask when picking up your packet and when not running. Masks should not be removed until the participant begins to run.
In accordance with Governor Cooper’s Executive Order No. 181, dated December 15, 2020, people must wear a face covering while exercising if outdoors and within six (6) feet of someone who does not reside in the exercising person’s household. The order specifically mentions public parks. The order provides that non-compliance may result in fines and/or criminal charges.
This means that all runners must either maintain a 6 foot distance from other runners (or others at the park) during the race or wear a face covering while running.
Participants must bring their own water/sports drink. The looped course allows you to drop and pass by your preferred fuel during your run. We apologize for the lack of on course fuel but these changes were put into place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic so that we are compliant or better than government regulations and following the best advice of public health experts.
Registration will close at midnight on Saturday, December 26. You must preregister to participate. No race weekend registration.
The race begins and ends at the marina/office in 4,000 square feet overlooking the lake. Wear distinct colors and have your fans bring binoculars to spot you across the lake. If the weather is warmer than the 11 degrees it's been in the past, the large deck area provides ample seating and views.
The course is a loop around Salem Lake (7 miles) with an out-and-back trail add-on so that each loop is 12.5k. You will run on a wide rolling dirt trail around the wooded shoreline of Salem Lake with a small portion on a paved bike path along Salem Creek. This is a very spectator-friendly event. The average temperature in early January is a high of 49 and a low of 29.
All finishers will receive finisher medallions.
T-shirts, in requested sizes, are guaranteed to those who registered before December 16th. This will be a long sleeve tech shirt in male/female sizes.
Packet pickup will be available at the Salem Lake Marina:
