Heart & Sole 5K Run/Walk to honor Plainview and Syosset Fire Departments for their service to the community
The Heart & Sole 5 Kilometer Run will go on as scheduled this Sunday morning. The race will start at 8:30 AM.
We are well aware of the weather report for Sunday, and it is expected that temperatures will be in the mid 80s between 8:30 AM and 9:30 AM.
We will be taking every precaution possible to assure the safety of our participants. There will be water at the start, water at the 1 mile mark, and water at the 2 mile mark. At the finish line there will be water, gatorade, and ice bags to help you cool off. There will also be water, soda, seltzer, watermelon and ice cream in the refreshment area just past the finish line. There will, of course, be an ambulance on site. We will be arranging for sprinklers and/or mist fans to be on site. There will be chairs at each of the two water stations on the course, and just past the finish line, for those who need to sit down.
Each course volunteer can be in direct contact within minutes with the EMT that will be stationed at the finish line, and our bikers will be patrolling the course and will be on the lookout for anyone who is having difficulty.
All that being said, heat affects everyone differently, and each of you needs to exercise your own judgement. Do not be ashamed to jog rather than to run competitively, or to walk all or part of the course rather than running it.
You should be aware that, if you are not feeling up to par, you have the opportunity to drop out of the Run at the intersection of Central Park Road and Southern Parkway approximately 1.8 miles into the course and less than a hundred yards from the finish area. There will be a volunteer at that intersection to direct you back to the finish area should you decide to drop out of the race and not score.
