While you may not be able to take part in your normal day-to-day activities, you can still be a part of the University of Rochester community and stay active by signing up for our Quad Fox Virtual 5K!
What is a Virtual 5K?
A virtual race is one that you run or walk on your own, at any time of day, in any place you like! The only rules are that you must complete the distance (5K/3.1mi) and you have to do it during the time period. Virtual races are a way to stay connected with one another when you can't get together for a normal 5K. We all may be in different places, but we can all run or walk many different versions of the same Quad Fox Virtual 5K! Once you finish your race, you will submit your time and receive a finisher's certificate and a t-shirt will be mailed to you!
How far do I run?
For this race, you will run or walk 5 Kilometers or 3.1 Miles. You can track this using a number of different options: a gps watch, your smartphone via many apps (MapMyRun, Runkeeper, Strava, etc.), or go to a known 5K course outside and follow the map! You can even use a treadmill if you'd prefer to stay indoors.
Where do I run?
The great thing about this 5K is that you can do this race anywhere that you want to. You can go to a track or a trail, a hilly course or a flat one! It's entirely up to you, just make sure that you are safe and following rules of the road, because there aren't any police shutting down intersections. Stop for cars and run or walk on sidewalks or the left hand shoulder of the road and stay visible at all times.
Important: Please follow all social distancing guidelines and maintain 6 feet between you and others. Additionally, be sure to follow your own state and local restrictions about public spaces, trails, or running locations. Consider running/jogging/walking in your neighborhood, or another safe location!
What do I do after I finish my race?
When the race period starts, you will be emailed instructions for how to submit your time. You can do that by either responding to the email with the correct format, or by using the website link provided. Once you finish, you should also share your race story with Wilson Commons Student Activities' and the Office of Alumni Relations and Constituent Engagement's social media pages using the hashtag #QuadFoxVirtual5K so that you can cheer others on!
Are there any prizes?
Everyone who finishes the 5K and submits their time will receive a customized finisher's certificate in their email and will be sent a finisher's t-shirt in the mail from Wilson Commons Student Activities and the Office of Alumni Relations and Constituent Engagement! Those eligible for shirts include: undergraduate students, graduate students, alumni, and parents of students.
How long do I have to finish the race?
The race period will begin Friday, April 10 at 9:00 a.m. EDT and will go until Thursdsay, April 30 at 5 p.m EDT. You can run and submit your race any time during this period. T-shirts will be mailed out after the race period is over.
