Description

Welcome to the 29th Annual Home Run for the Homeless!

Our mission is to provide interim housing, food, training and support services for those families who are earnestly seeking to improve their lives and living conditions. Our commitment is to do this without government funding or paid staff, but by uniting our community in the true spirit of service. Gennesaret does not promote any religious organization or practices; however, it was founded on Christian principles. Encompassing our mission is our unbending goal to treat those whom we serve with respect to enable them to retain their dignity in difficult and stressful times.

All proceeds go directly to serving those in dire financial straits through our Family Nutritional Center and our family housing apartments. On behalf of those who are challenged in these tough times, we thank you for your support of our endeavors.

We look forward to the day we can all run together on Thanksgiving morning.  Until then, we wish a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING BY HELPING OTHERS

As our only fundraiser for the entire year, we sincerely appreciate your donation. 100% of your donation is used to provide meals to those in need.   We provide meals to those in need at an extremely low cost of $0.50 meal.

URGENT PLEA

Dear supporter of the “Home Run for the Homeless”,

This is the 29th year of the annual Gennesaret “Home Run for the Homeless” and you may have been a participant in years past or may be someone interested in considering supporting it this year for the first time.  In either case, this is an extraordinary year for all of us as we adjust to the ever-changing challenges that come from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The pandemic has impacted all of us in different ways; some us have experienced the painful loss of a loved one from contracting the virus, all of us have had our lives disrupted and some of us have experienced the hardship of job loss.  Thanks be to God, our family has been healthy through this pandemic, although I did lose my job in April and still am searching for a new opportunity.

The pain that we have all experienced from the pandemic – as great as it is – is exasperated exponentially for the poor that we have served at Gennesaret for the past 34 years.  Many of us have a support system of family or friends who can help us cope with the madness of the pandemic, whereas the poor we serve most often do not.  As we struggled with finding toilet paper, those we served struggled with having food to eat for the day.

Those who have done the race in the past have heard us say at the start of the race that our annual Home Run for the Homeless keeps our doors open all year long.  Covid has impacted our race as well and how we are doing it this year is significantly different than years past.  The camaraderie, the door prizes and the positive, joyful spirit that is ever present on Thanksgiving Day at 419 W. Exchange St. will be constrained this year due to Covid.

But the needs of those we serve unfortunately will not be constrained and actually will be increased.  Our ability to serve those in need has been the direct result of the generous support of all those who have come out to participate in the Home Run for Homeless for the past 28 years.

Therefore, in this 29th year, we are making an URGENT PLEA for your heartfelt consideration of supporting the Home Run for the Homeless once again, whether virtually or in-person.  The funds we get from this race are critical for us to continue to serve the poor of the greater Akron area.

Gennesaret, Inc. is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that has been serving the poor for 34 years in Akron with a core base of about 300 volunteers.  We are a grassroots organization that depends on God’s providence for all that we do and the generosity of our supporters like you.

If you can support us this year, please do so either virtually or in-person and help us continue serving the poorest of the poor in the Greater Akron area. God bless you and your loved ones and thank you.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Bob and Mary Dirgo
