Strava Segment Challenge

For those looking to take on the Strava segment challenge for the climb, here’s the link to the official route.

Important Details:

  • The segment starts slightly AFTER the official ride start to ensure riders are fully underway.

  • The segment ends at the apex of the climb, as you enter the parking lot.

  • Review the route carefully before beginning to avoid confusion.

  • Tunnels may occasionally interfere with GPS signals, though this is rare.

  • This challenge is for the ascent onlydescending cyclists must follow posted speed limits, as required by Olympic National Park.

Important Ride Information

Ride the Hurricane cannot provide SAG support due to the road closure. During the event, only emergency vehicles are permitted on the route.

If you are unable to complete the ride, you must wait in a safe location until the road reopens to motor vehicles, at which point you can arrange for a ride down the mountain.

After-Ride Party at the Pier 

  • Turn around and ride back down to the finish at Port Angeles City Pier.
  • RSVP for a free Taco Bar, Local Craft Beer, and other refreshments! (RSVP link will be sent out before the ride)

Detailed Route Description

🚴 Ride the Hurricane: Five Unique Segments

  • Start: Port Angeles City Pier – Begin your journey at the edge of Port Angeles Harbor.

Segment 1: Olympic Discovery Trail (Mile 0 – 0.6)

  • Scenic Start: A short but beautiful half-mile ride along the Waterfront Trail section of the Olympic Discovery Trail.

Segment 2: Residential Streets (Mile 0.6 – 2.1)

  • Through Town: Ride past the 9/11 Memorial Park, then follow this route:
  • Up Francis St.
  • Left on 8th St.
  • Right on Race St. to the start of Lower Hurricane Ridge Road.

Segment 3: Lower Hurricane Ridge Road (Mile 2.1 – 7.2)

  • Challenging Climb: The longest stretch between aid stations and one of the toughest sections.
  • Limited Vehicle Access: Road open only to local traffic. No cyclist drop-offs at the park after 7 AM.

Segment 4: Enter Olympic National Park (Mile 7.2 – 19.5)

The Heart of the Ride:

  • Car-Free Zone! Hurricane Ridge Road is closed to motor vehicles.
  • Wind through old-growth forests with breathtaking views at every turn.
  • Aid stations every 2-3 miles to keep you fueled.
  • Tunnels: Important safety details apply – review before the ride.

Segment 5: The Final Push (Mile 19.5 – 20.1)

Summit Challenge:

  • Each turn feels like the last—until another appears!
  • Dancing Hands Drumming Group will cheer you on at the final stretch.
  • You made it! Take in the incredible views and celebrate at the summit!

The Tunnels of Hurricane Ridge

Segment #4 includes three short tunnels just past Aid Station #3. Lights are not needed. Click on the picture to view a short video of a ride through the tunnels

Ride Support & Amenities

  • Gear Check at the Start – Drop off your gear at the ride start so you don’t have to carry it up the climb; it will be available post-ride.

  • Pre-Ride Fuel – Enjoy coffee, fresh fruit, and water bottle refills before you begin.

  • Midway Hydration Station – A water & Gatorade-only stop located halfway between the start and the park entrance (no additional services).

  • Five Aid Stations – Each stocked with water, Gatorade, snacks (featuring a special treat), small tools, and a bike pump (except where NO SERVICES is noted).

  • Bike Mechanic Support – Available at the Heart of the Hills Aid Station and at the Summit.

  • RestroomsPortable toilets are available at every aid station.

  • Summit RefuelHearty snacks, chocolate milk, and toilets await you at the top.

  • Post-Ride Bike Corral – A secured, attended bike parking area after the ride (subject to cancellation if there is low interest).
