About Sisters at Heart
OUR MISSION
In 2007, Sisters at Heart's was founded with the main mission is to promote breast cancer awareness and support men and women diagnosed. We are a 501c.3 non-profit group under Chesapeake Charities of dedicated survivors and volunteers. Join us in our mission to Make a Difference in the lives of those affected with breast cancer. Help us to provide awareness through early detection, by through educating and providing support services.
BREAST CANCER KEY STATISTICS
INCIDENCE:
- Approximately 316,950 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in 2026.
- An additional 59,080 cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer will also be diagnosed.
- For men, about 2,800 new cases of invasive breast cancer are anticipated.
SURVIVATL RATES:
- Overall, 5-year relative survival for breast cancer is approximately 92%, meaning most women survive at least five years after diagnosis.
- Despite advances in treatment and early detection, disparities in outcomes persist, particularly among different demographic groups.
- Regional stage (spread to nearby lymph nodes or tissues): lower survival, around 86% according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Distant stage (metastatic cancer): survival drops to about 31%.
- Advances in treatment and awareness have contributed to a 44% decline in breast cancer death rates since 1989.
- Early detection through mammograms and screening significantly improves survival, as cancers found at an early stage are more treatable.
MORTALITY:
- According to the American Cancer Society, the lifetime risk of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 43 women (≈2.3%).
- The mortality rate of breast cancer in the U.S. is approximately 18.9 deaths per 100,000 women per year, with a lifetime risk of dying from breast cancer around 2.3%.
- Race and ethnicity influence outcomes. Black women have the highest death rates, while Asian and Pacific Islander women have the lowest according to the American Cancer Society.
- In 2026, an estimated 42,140 women in the U.S. are expected to die from breast cancer.
LIFETIME RISK:
- About 1 in 8 women (approximately 13%) will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.
