Jackson in Action
Jackson In Action (JIA) is a community coalition that promotes healthy lifestyles for children, their families, and the greater community. JIA became a coalition in 2011, when a group of concerned agencies came together to increase physical activity and nutrition, and decrease poor health and eating habits.
Jackson In Action works to promote active lifestyles throughout our county through various physical fitness initiatives. The Pace and Pedal 5K and Duathlon event is one of JIA's big events each year, with over 300 participants running, walking, and biking at Wazee Lake Recreation Area each year in May. Other popular fitness events include the Gobbler Giveback Thanksgiving Day Walk/Run, the Hunter-Hiker Fitness classes each fall, and the annual JIA Family Snowshoe event.
One example of a healthy living project coordinated through JIA is a Harvest of the Month initiative which raises awareness of healthy harvest items every month including fruits and vegetables, and encourages community members and families to try new healthy food items and recipes. Harvest of the Month is now being sustained in several partner organizations throughout Jackson County.
Jackson In Action coalition partners include Black River Memorial Hospital, Jackson County UW-Extension, Ho-Chunk Health Care Center, Jackson County Public Health, Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Chippewa Valley, Lunda Community Center, LLC, Together For Jackson County Kids, Black River Falls School District, and Alma Center-Humbird-Merrillan School District.
