The Legacy and Impact of the 4Y5K
The 4Y5K: Community of Care is a beloved tradition at the University of Virginia, held annually on the morning of the last home football game. Established in memory of Leslie Baltz, a fourth-year UVA student who tragically passed away in 1997 due to high-risk drinking behaviors on that same day, the event aims to create a safer, more positive environment for students. The 4Y5K fosters community spirit and raises awareness about the dangers of high-risk drinking, while offering opportunities to learn safer strategies and make lasting memories.
In recent years, the event has taken on even greater significance. Following the tragic shooting in November 2022, which claimed the lives of three UVA football players—Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler, and D’Sean Perry—the race incorporated new elements to honor these students and embrace a "community of care." Hence, the 4Y5K: Community of Care was born, emphasizing not just individual safety but also collective well-being and support within the UVA community.
Each year, the race directs its proceeds to meaningful causes. Traditionally, funds have supported the Leslie Baltz Art Study Fund, which assists students pursuing art history or studio art. This year, in addition to supporting the Baltz Fund, we are proud to announce that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to ReadyKids Charlottesville, a local nonprofit dedicated to providing counseling, family support, and early learning opportunities to children and families in the Charlottesville area.
By participating in the 4Y5K, students and community members honor the memory of those we've lost while actively contributing to initiatives that promote safety, care, and well-being across the UVA community and beyond.
