4.95K Fun Run/Walk
495M Kids Race
Information
We’re opening up new opportunities for bicyclists and pedestrians—and you’re invited to be among the first to experience them!
Join the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Transurban, operator of the 495 Express Lanes, for a free family-friendly event celebrating the opening of the new 495 Express Lanes Bicycle and Pedestrian Trail in McLean, VA.
Why 4.95?
The distance is a nod to I-495 and the event celebrates the opening of the new bicycle and pedestrian trail that runs parallel to I-495 and the 495 Express Lanes. The trail was built as part of the 495 NEXT project, which added 2.5 miles of new Express Lanes from Tysons to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange near the Maryland border in November 2025, delivering a more reliable option for Beltway travelers while creating new community connections for walking and biking.

About the Project
The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project is a public-private partnership between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban that extended the 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchanges near the American Legion Bridge. The new Lanes opened to traffic in November 2025.
Bicycle and Pedestrian Trail
The approximate two-and-a-half mile trail runs parallel to I-495 between Lewinsville Road and Live Oak Drive in Northern Virginia's McLean area, and will provide a new, paved bicycle and pedestrian facility with connections to Scott's Run Nature Preserve and Fairfax County Park Authority's trail system. Situated behind new noise walls, the trail provides a safe, separated facility for bicyclists and pedestrians with newly built connections across the Beltway at Lewinsville Road, Old Dominion Drive and Georgetown Pike.
