This race is going to be a race to remember! Not only was this race recognized in 2014 by Active.com as one of nine of the most scenic Fall half marathon courses in New England, but new for 2021, registration will include a post-race meal provided by Backyard Bistro in addition to a commemorative bib and finisher's medal.
Beginning at Shelburne Field House, the half marathon is a loop course. You’ll start out running through one of Shelburne’s most popular neighborhoods before heading into beautiful grounds of Meach Cove. After a short jaunt past Shelburne Farms, you’ll progress north to the Shelburne Shipyard where you’ll turn around and head back home (don’t miss the beautiful views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks along the way).
This race usually draws racers from across the country and from Canada and has sold out every year for the past 5 years. Again this year we are pleased to offer a $10 discount to racers age 12 & under for all of our races. Do not hesitate to register. This promises to be our best race of 2021! RACE IS LIMITED TO 325 RACERS.
We are extremely pleased to bring you a post-race meal, immediately following your race, provided by Backyard Bistro. We will have vegetarian and gluten free options. This food will be for racers only.
There is a 3-1/2 hour limit for this race - regardless of the distance you are running. If you are out on the course after the time limit has passed, you will be running at your own risk because police officers and other staff/volunteers may not be available on the course; however, for an additional 15 minutes (if necessary) we will have a follow vehicle behind the final runner. In addition, someone from the timing team will be waiting, cheering you on, and recording your time until 3 hours and 45 minutes from the start of the last racer.
As with our Charlotte Covered Bridge 5K/10K & Half Marathon, we will once again be using our staggered starts based on race pace. You will be asked for your expected finish time during registration. This will assign you to a starting group. Aside from group 1 which will start at 8:00 am, there will be no assigned start times for the other groups. Each group will start immediately after the group before it.
Once a group is called, they will enter the starting chute. After their bib number is recorded, they will be allowed to cross the starting mat, which will start the time for their race. The purpose of lining runners up by pace is to prevent as much passing as possible out on the course; however, racers are not required to stay with their group. We do expect that all racers will start no later than 8:15.
In order to keep our racers as safe as possible, we will be using a staggered start at this race. Racers will be assigned to a starting group based on their expected finish time when they register. Group 1 will be the fastest, and Group 8 will be the slowest. At 7:55 am, Starting Group 1 will be lined up in the starting chute. At the front of the chute, we will have two staff members from our timing team. They will be recording bib numbers. Please be sure it is visible. Once they record the bib number, that racer will be instructed to go. They will then start their race. Their race time will begin when their chip is read going over the starting mats.
Starting Group 2, and all groups thereafter will be called to the starting chute once the previous group is almost all out. There is NO starting time for these groups. They will go out as fast as the group(s) before them allow. All racers should arrive at the Field House ready to go by 7:50 am. We will start to move racers into their groups immediately after the pre-race meeting. Please keep in mind that parking is off-site and some time will be needed to walk to the Field House.
Race bibs and t-shirts will be available at Fleet Feet Sports, 77 Pearl Street, Essex Junction, Vermont on Saturday, November 6 from noon to 6 pm for those who would like to pick up their packet early. You are welcome to pick up a friend's race packet as long as they've already signed the waiver. Racers will receive a 15% in-store discount when picking up their race packets. Those who pick up their packets on Saturday do not need to check in on race day, but they should arrive no later than 7:40 am to be sure to hear pre-race announcements. Note: If you are entering the address into your mapping app for PRE-RACE pickup, be sure to use Essex Junction, VT; NOT Essex, VT.
Race day check in will open at 7:00 am, Sunday, November 7 at Shelburne Field House for those who have not already picked up their packets.
Due to the high volume of cars expected, there is no parking at Shelburne Field House for this event. Please park at one of these nearby locations:
None of these locations are far from Shelburne Field House. You are welcome to bring a bag to leave behind at the Field House; however, no one is assigned to watch these bags, so you will be leaving them at our own risk.
There will be water stations at 3 locations along the course. They will be located at:
Plain water and Nuun will be available in cups at the water stations. Because of COVID, volunteers will be filling cups and placing them on a table. They will not be handing out the water. For your protection, and that of our volunteers, we recommend that you travel with your own water; however, water and electrolyte will be available to anyone who wants it.
In addition to the start/finish, portable toilets will be located at the Depot Road water station and just before the 10K turnaround.
It is every racer’s responsibility to familiarize themselves with our Racer Rules. If you have any questions, please feel free to email email@example.com.
