Please support me and Team Covenant House in 2025's Crescent City Classic

Greetings Family & Friends

Thank you so much for your past support which last year allowed me to raise over $51,000!

While the national and worldwide situation continues to be challenging on so many fronts, New Orleans had a fabulous Mardi Gras earlier this month, as well as St. Patrick’s and St. Joseph’s Days festivities.

Not everyone, however, gets to celebrate. Homeless youth still struggle to survive day in and day out. That is why I’ll be participating on April 19 in the 10K Crescent City Classic’s charity program for the 12th year in a row for Covenant House of New Orleans (CHNO). I hope to reach a goal of $53,000...or more!

Why do I continue to raise money for Covenant House of New Orleans?

Because more youth are turning to CHNO for help due to economic hardship, housing instability, and anti-LGBTQ+ policies. In 2024 demand for services increased significantly from the previous year with CHNO serving 2,999 across all programs.

Because Louisiana has one of the highest rates of youth homelessness. Support ensures that more young people receive immediate care and long-term assistance including on-site adolescent healthcare, provided in partnership with Tulane Medical School; as 85% of CHNO’s young people experience profound trauma and PTSD, they are able to receive mental and behavioral health services from licensed counselors and a Tulane prescribing psychologist.

Because CHNO provides its residents with individual & family counseling, educational & vocational support, life skills, and much more such as Off-Site Apartments, and Supportive Housing for youth and young parents with a diagnosed disability.

And, because CHNO relies on a mix of government funding and private donations, with increasing uncertainty around federal and state budgets, approximately 35% of the annual $7.5M annual operating budget is at risk.

If you're still wondering why I run, well, walk, check out this article which just appeared in CHNO's online newsletter — https://www.covenanthousenola.org/whybrianruns/

As compelling as these facts are, might I suggest you take a virtual tour of CHNO? You’ll be able to see for yourself exactly what Covenant House provides and why it's so worthy of support. The Welcome to Covenant House Virtual Tour is viewable at https://youtu.be/xLmiR-G6kYo  To meet some of the youth who have benefitted from CHNO and your donations to it, check out https://www.covenanthousenola.org/our-impact-success-stories/  for some inspiring stories as well as some important Facts & Figures.

For these many reasons, I hope you might be able to support the most vulnerable members of our community. If you’d prefer to send a check, please make it out to "Covenant House New Orleans" and mail it to me by April 15 at:

Brian Sands
919 St. Philip, #11
New Orleans, LA 70116

and I will add it to my donations. I truly appreciate your generosity, no matter what the amount...every little bit helps--thanks!!

And this year I'll be walking in memory of my cousin Faye Seltzer, friend Todd Maiden, and college classmates & friends Mark O'Friel and David Handelman who all passed away last year and who were all committed and steadfast supporters of Covenant House.

If you have any questions, please give me a holler.
Many, many thanks,
Brian

PS  Attached are pics from last year's Crescent City Classic: with the WWII Museum’s Victory Belles at the start of the race; being introduced by Michael Wattigny to the crowd as the top fundraiser; getting ready to go for the gold; and finishing in non-record breaking time but with a smile on my face.

PPS   My ever-youthful 1st and 2nd grade teacher Miss Francinelee Hand recently gave me a heads up about this 2+ year old post that I hadn't seen before — https://theneworleans100.com/special-issues/philanthropy-edition/2022/11/11/brian-sands-honored-as-afps-outstanding-volunteer-fundraiser/18058
