Josephine's Village was started when a very special little heart warrior was fighting for her life in UVA Medical Center's PICU. Jo touched many people's hearts and a village was formed to support her as she underwent two open heart surgeries at nine weeks old and gave all she had to fight for her life. Sadly, Josephine passed away on Christmas Day 2017 at 20-weeks old. Her parents kept Josephine's Village alive to bring awareness to Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs), and eventually organized Josephine's Village 5K charity race to honor their daughter by supporting other families faced with CHDs.
Josephine's Village 5K aims to:
* Honor Josephine & all heart warriors who have passed or are fighting to live with Congenital Heart Defects
* Educate the public on CHDs, as 1 in 110 babies are born with some type of CHD and research is poorly funded
* Support babies and children with CHDs by raising funds for two local nonprofits that support those with CHDs and their families: UVA Children's Heart Family Fund & Mended Little Hearts of Charlottesville
* Provide a race to the community that is Fun, Family Friendly, Safe and Provides Remembrance of Loved Ones
Josephine's Village 5K is open to all ages and is family friendly! Babies in strollers are welcome! All runners and walkers are welcome! The route has a gradual incline during the first mile, then tapers into a relatively flat course with a short climb on Newcomb Road South towards the UVA Bookstore and on Alderman Road as you near the turn back onto Lewis Mountain Road to find yourself on a nice downward stretch back to Alumni Hall.
*Note: Register by July 17th to be guaranteed a race t-shirt! If you register AFTER July 17th, you are not guaranteed a race t-shirt, as only a small amount of extra t-shirts in select sizes will be ordered and available on a first come basis during packet pickups.
Additional race information can be found at http://www.josephinesvillage.com.

R on Lewis Mountain Rd down to Alumni Hall!
Leave Alumni Hall by heading up Lewis Mtn Rd, do a loop through the Lewis Mountain Neighborhood (R on Cameron Ln, L on Bollingwood Rd, R on Minor Rd) before jumping on Alderman Rd and heading left down the sidewalk to our first mile marker and water station! NEW THIS YEAR… we will be using both sides of Alderman Rd! As you come down Alderman you will see our volunteers in orange vests at the crosswalk in front of St.Thomas Aquinas Church; at this point you’ll cross the road to use the sidewalk on the other side of Alderman Rd until you get to the Alderman/McCormick traffic light, where a University Police Department Officer will be stopping traffic to make sure you can safely move through the two crosswalks at that intersection, placing you on the sidewalk on the far side of McCormick Rd. Continue on McCormick Rd all the way into the heart of UVA Campus! When you get close to the UVA Chapel you’ll see some of our volunteers near that crosswalk, this is where you’ll switch to the other side of the road and continue down that sidewalk to University Ave where you’ll turn left. You’re only on University Ave for about 10ft until you turn left again onto Newcomb Rd and run up the hill to mile marker 2 and the second water station! When you get to the end of Newcomb Rd you’ll turn right back onto McCormick Rd (using the sidewalk you are now closest to; no need to cross the road again). When you get back to the Alderman/McCormick traffic light turn right (no road crossing needed) and follow along the sidewalk or curb of the road until you hit Lewis Mountain Rd again! Once you turn right on Lewis Mtn Rd you’re in the home stretch! Keep going until you cross the finish line!
