On September 27th, I will be participating in Seattle’s Most Iconic Climb—Base 2 Space—to support Fred Hutch Cancer Center through the Space Needle Foundation.
This cause is deeply personal to me. In July 2021, I lost the sight in one eye, and by November, the other. Doctors discovered a three-inch tumor in my brain, and soon after surgery, I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. I underwent a stem cell transplant to treat the remaining tumor, and today, I’m proud and grateful to be a patient of Fred Hutch.
Every person I’ve encountered at Fred Hutch has shown extraordinary kindness, compassion, and patience. I truly can’t imagine a better place to receive care, and I’m so thankful for the team that continues to support me.
This climb is especially meaningful because it falls on my birthday. There’s no better way I can think to celebrate than by giving back to an organization that has given me so much. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to climb these stairs and share this moment with family and friends.

Register through the Base 2 Space home page. Choose Adult or Kids registration and follow the steps to register.

After adding personal information and choosing your start time, etc., you’ll see a Fundraising section, click on the first check box agreeing to raise the minimum (it will be waived) and then select the option to create or join a team. In the “Join a Team” box. Enter “Team Gary” to join Gary’s team.

Participants who join Team Gary will have their $200 fundraising minimum covered, thanks to generous support from Gary.
