In December 2019, during my semi annual check up, we documented a new growth and noted to review on my return visit. COVID hit, although our world was full of uncertainty, I never skipped a follow up appointment. I had been diligent about my skin checks, but the growth changed and if I missed that follow up, my story would have changed. I was diagnosed with Stage 1 and within in the week, I underwent surgery as well more uncertainty if anything further would be detected.
The road to recovery is life long, but I am determined to stay proactive through skin check ups as well as raise awareness. I continued to see my dermatologist regularly, and I make sure to get checked every three months. I also continue sun protective measures, such as wearing sunscreen daily as well as protective clothing.
It's been a few years now, and I'm grateful to say that I'm cancer-free. I still get regular checkups, and I continue to monitor my skin closely. It's a reminder that skin cancer can happen to anyone, and that being proactive is key.
Looking back, I realize that catching the melanoma at stage 1 was a blessing in disguise. It was a wake-up call to take action as well as be a beacon for drawing attention. We are blessed with a great community and medical community in Pittsburgh.
