Suggested Hikes & Ways to Move
From the Superstition Mountains to the treasures of tucked-away Ponderosa Pine trails, the Tonto has a collection of nearly 900 miles of National Forest System Trails that will appease every outdoor enthusiast all year long.
Many trails serve as a daily hike for residents or allow visitors to see Arizona's breathtaking scenery outside the city. The parking lots of popular trailheads fill up quickly, especially on weekends and during the winter season, so be prepared and have a backup plan in case the parking lots are full.
Arizona's state parks showcase some of the most fun and best hikes in the state!
Hikers have the option to hike through the beautiful and unique Sonoran Desert where they will encounter centuries old saguaros, rocky landscapes, and hardy wildlife like desert mule deer and javelina that are able to carve out an existence in this extreme habitat.
Phoenix is home to more than 41,000 acres of desert parks and mountain preserves, and 200-plus miles of trails. Millions of people enjoy city trails every year.
Arizona’s national parks protect some of the most iconic landscapes in the Southwest — from the sheer cliffs of Canyon de Chelly to the volcanic formations of Chiricahua and the desert heritage preserved at Casa Grande Ruins.
These parks showcase thousands of years of history, vibrant Indigenous cultures, diverse wildlife, and rugged terrain shaped by time, offering visitors everything from quiet canyon walks to dramatic mountain trails.
Each site tells a different piece of Arizona’s story, inviting exploration across deserts, forests, and high plateaus.
