FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q - What is the minimum age to register for each event?
A-  Although there is no "standard" age at which a runner should get involved in the sport of running, we recommend runners be at least age 14 for the Marathon, 12 for the Half Marathon and Half Marathon Relay, and 10 years old for the 5K Fun Run. Ultimately, it is up to each parent or guardian to adjust our recommended age, higher or lower, depending upon their dependent's ability to participate in our event.

Q - Are dogs allowed on the course?
A - No. Pets, wagons, rollerblades, skateboards, scooters or bicycles of any kind are NOT allowed on the course for safety concerns.

Q - Are baby strollers allowed?
A - Yes, you are allowed to run with a jogger stroller.  All strollers are required to start at the back of the pack, regardless of your speed.

Q - Will there be race day registration?
A - There will be no race day registration.

Q - Will there be race day packet pickup available?
A - Yes. Starting one hour prior to the event.

Q - Will this marathon be a Boston Qualifer?
A - Yes, the Bakersfield Marathon is a USATF, Boston Qualifer course.

Q - Can I run with an iPod/headphones?
A - Yes. USATF, the national governing body of the sport, recently amended its ban on headphones, iPods and similar devices. It is recommended that athletes keep only one ear bud in to be able to hear directions from race officials or emergency vehicles.

Q - How does the Half Marathon Relay work?
A - The 2-person Half Marathon Relay covers the half marathon route only. We do not have a relay for the marathon course. At the start of the event, the 1st leg person will start with all other participants – relay or not – at the starting line. The 2nd leg person is bused to our Relay Exchange Point at Bakersfield High School approximately 7 miles into the Half Marathon course. This person will wait for the 1st leg person to complete the 7 miles and hand off the "baton" to the 2nd leg person who will run 6.1 miles to the finish line. The 1st leg person (who just finished their leg of the race) will receive their finisher's medallion and sweatshirt at the Relay Exchange Point then ride the bus back to the finish line so they can cheer on their partner and enjoy our Finish Line Celebration!
