Equestrian Trail Etiquette

HIKERS YIELD

Did you know, horses are a prey species?

  • They perceive anything moving fast, quiet, and/or above them to be a potential predator.

  • Runners, walkers, and hikers can easily spook a horse, and possibly injuring themselves, their rider, or another trail user.

What should you do if you meet a horse on the trail?

  • Stop and move to the lowest side of the trail if possible.

  • Do not make any quick or erratic movements.

  • Most importantly, talk to the rider! Horses recognize human voices as non-predatory.

  • Trail safety is everyone’s responsibility!
