Equestrian Trail Etiquette
HIKERS YIELD
Did you know, horses are a prey species?
-
They perceive anything moving fast, quiet, and/or above them to be a potential predator.
-
Runners, walkers, and hikers can easily spook a horse, and possibly injuring themselves, their rider, or another trail user.
What should you do if you meet a horse on the trail?
-
Stop and move to the lowest side of the trail if possible.
-
Do not make any quick or erratic movements.
-
Most importantly, talk to the rider! Horses recognize human voices as non-predatory.
-
Trail safety is everyone’s responsibility!
