Description

The Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon (“SVKT”) is one of the country’s largest triathlons specifically for kids aged three through 16.

A triathlon consists of a combination of three sports: swimming, cycling, & running. A duathlon only has two sports -- cycling & running (no swimming).

The kids start the race at the De Anza College pool in "waves" of 20 to 25 kids. Triathlon kids swim an age-appropriate distance while Duathlon kids skip the swim. From the pool, they run to the transition area to change for cycling. Then they head out to the bike course on roads closed to traffic and completely inside the De Anza College campus. When the kids are done with the bike, they head back to transition to put their bike away and head out to the De Anza Track for the run portion of the race. They finish on the track by crossing through the finishing chute right into the event expo to celebrate their great accomplishment!

Parents are allowed to accompany their child aged 6 & under throughout the entire race including swimming with them and running beside them on the bike and run. Parents of children aged 7 to 10 may come into transition to help setup and tear down their kid's spot. Children aged 11 and up are developmentally ready to race on their own!

Event distances are based on the age of the athlete:
3-6 under: 25-yard swim; 1-mile bike; 600-yard run
7-8 years: 50-yard swim; 2-mile bike; 1,000-yard run
9-10 years: 100-yard swim; 4-mile bike; 1,000-yard run
11-12 years: 150-yard swim; 6-mile bike; 1,800-yard run
13-16 years: 200-yard swim; 6-mile bike; 2,600-yard run

NOTE: Event age group placement is based on age on race day - August 13th. USAT rankings are based on age as of December 31.

Awards will be 3 deep for each age and gender. i.e.,  1st through 3rd for 10 year old boys, 1st through 3rd for 10 year old girls.

Duathlon
A duathlon is a run-bike-run. Kids will run from the pool area to transition, and complete the same bike and run courses and distances as those doing the full triathlon.

Awards will be 3 deep for each age group and gender. i.e.,  1st through 3rd for 9-10 year old boys, 1st through 3rd for 9-10 year old girls.

The Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon is an inclusive race. All USAT sanctioned events allow athletes to compete in the gender category they identify with. If that choice is different from their assigned sex at birth, pre-registration of their gender category is required. If you are unsure of how to do this, do not hesitate to contact us at racedirector@svkidstri.org and we will walk you through the process.

If an athlete has other special needs, contact us at least 1 month before the race and we will work together to come up with a race plan that takes their needs into account.
