Marathon Relay Teams

Not everyone wants to run a marathon.  One way for people to be a part of the marathon experience without making the huge leap is through a marathon relay.  So, what is a marathon relay exactly? Like a marathon, a marathon relay is an event that covers 26.2 miles of distance. But instead of you running all of those miles by yourself, each runner on your team will only run a portion of the marathon, but in aggregate, the team will run 26.2 miles.

There will be three exchange points along the course where runners will transfer a race belt containing a race bib with timing chip attached. Runners participating in the relay are encouraged to create a team sash so that they may be identified as relay participants (and for team spirit!). More details will be crafted in the weeks to come, but trust us, this going to be a really fun way to experience the course!!!

We have three types of Relay Teams

  • Marathon Relay Team:  Any group of two to four people can come together to make a Marathon Relay Team.

  • Greek Life Marathon Relay Team:  Are you part of a Greek Life organization?  Get two to four people together, dress up in your best Greek outfit and come run a Marathon with us!

  • Fitness Center Marathon Relay Team:  Calling all gyms, fitness centers, yoga studios, kickboxing arenas, flying trapeze troops, pickle ball clubs, pilates pals, masters swimmers, cross fitters, and orange theorists! This relay is a chance for you and up to four of your training buddies to put your fitness to the test and compete on behalf of your gym against other fitness enthusiasts from other gyms! The fitness center with the fastest team and the one with the most number of teams entered will each win a special award (on top of bragging rights, and what could be better than that!)

Wild Rumpus Participants

Wanna add some spice to your Classic City experience? Participate as a Wild Rumpus runner.  What does this mean?  The Wild Rumpus is an annual Halloween parade and spectacle in Athens, GA that champions creativity, community and self expression. We invite runners to participate in the marathon, half marathon or relay experience wearing imaginative costumes or engaging in a dynamic performance.  Would you like to beat a Guinness World Record?  How about trying to be the fastest marathon runner while juggling, or balancing a pineapple on your head or running in a Spiderman costume? Check out the Guinness World Record website to learn more about how to break a record.  https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/records/showcase/marathons

When you register for Classic City Marathon, Athena Half Marathon or Classic City Relay make sure to answer the pull down questions regarding your participation as a Wild Rumpus Runner.
