RWJBarnabas Health and the New Jersey Devils have teamed up for the 8th annual RWJBarnabas Health Running with the Devils 5K Run & Walk to celebrate their collective commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles to build stronger, healthier communities. This event also honors the selfless and heroic efforts of the more than 38,000 RWJBarnabas Health's healthcare workers who work tirelessly to provide essential care to communities throughout New Jersey. Thanks to your support, along with the New Jersey Devils, RWJBarnabas Health can continue to provide our patients and their families with the comprehensive healthcare they need whenever they need it.
This year, we will again hold the competitive 5K race on a USATF-certified course and the Wellness Walk along Cherry Lane and the scenic reservoir at South Mountain Recreation Complex. Additional fun activities are planned post-race at the award-winning Essex County Turtle Back Zoo. All registered runners and walkers receive free admission to the Zoo following the race. We hope you will join us for an action-packed day filled with wellness activities, animal sightings, and much more!
For individuals and families not available to participate in the live event, the virtual format offers the option to run or walk around a neighborhood, at a local park, or even on a treadmill from October 3 to November 3 using the RunGo App. Virtual runners and walkers will hear custom audio messages of support and encouragement from New Jersey Devils players and RWJBarnabas Health patients via the RunGo App. Virtual participants will receive FREE access to Turtle Back Zoo between November 4 and December 30.
Exciting fundraising incentives are offered for individuals and teams based on benchmarks of $100, $250, $500, $1000, and $2,500. These incentives are highlighted by tickets to New Jersey Devils games, signed New Jersey Devils merchandise, and the opportunity to engage with players/alums, among other items. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers and in multiple age categories (Live and Virtual).
All of the event's proceeds will support RWJBarnabas Health's efforts to protect and build healthier communities throughout New Jersey.

Frequently Asked Questions
Registration
Do you offer discounted registrations for military personnel?
We do offer a discount to military personnel. Upon registering, you can check a box that will apply the discount at the end of the registration process. You can also sign up as a team during the registration process.
Will participation medals be given?
Participation medals will be distributed to the first 1,000 live and virtual runners registered.
Will awards be given out?
Awards are given to the top three male, female, and non-binary finishers for both the live and virtual events. Participants will also receive awards in five-year increments, beginning at age nine.
Will participants receive t-shirts?
On the event day, t-shirts will be distributed to the first 1,000 participants (runners and walkers) registered for the live event. Virtual participants will also receive a still-yet-to-be-revealed item, but past items have included winter hats, cooling towels, and running belts.
Is the live 5K Run and Wellness Walk held at the same place and time?
The 5K Run and the Wellness Walk are held at the same site, 9 Cherry Lane, West Orange, N.J. The Race begins at 9:00 a.m. The walk will begin after the runners have turned off Cherry Lane into the Reservoir area, approximately 15-20 minutes after the start of the Race. Participants can walk the entire 5K route (3.1 miles) or just the Reservoir portion (1.8 miles).
Where is parking available for the Race and Walk?
Parking is available for all participants in lots close to the Race & Walk Course, including off Cherry Lane and at the Turtle Back Zoo, 560 Northfield Avenue, West Orange, N.J. As parts of Cherry Lane will be closed due to the event, alternate directions may be provided to access these lots. If registration numbers exceed the amount of nearby parking, shuttles may be offered from satellite parking sites. We will provide updated parking information to all registered participants in the weeks leading up to the event and post it on the event website.
What time does registration open?
Registration for the live Run and Walk opens at 7:00 a.m.
Is there onsite registration available on November 3?
Onsite registration is available on November 3 but must be paid via credit card as this event is cashless. Currently, we cannot accept Venmo, Zelle, or Apple Pay.
Live Event
Are strollers permitted on the Race and Walk Course?
Strollers are permitted on the Race and Walk Course but must line up at the end of the queue so that they do not impede the path of other participants.
Are dogs allowed at the event?
While we love our animals as much as you do, dogs are not allowed at the RWJBarnabas Health Running with the Devils 5K Run & Walk, a USA Track & Field (USATF) sanctioned event. USATF prohibits dogs from participating in sanctioning events. South Mountain Recreation Complex is a public park; however, dogs are not allowed on the course during our Race, in Start Village, or at the Turtle Back Zoo. Service animals are permitted in all three locations.
Virtual Event
Do I have to use the RunGo app to participate in the virtual event?
While it is not mandatory to use, only those who submit times through the RunGo app will be considered for prizes. We encourage all (live and virtual participants) to download the free app and hear encouraging messages of support from current New Jersey Devils players and RWJBarnabas Health providers and patients.
Can I run the virtual event multiple times?
The race route will go live on the RunGo app beginning October 3. Registered participants can run the route as often as they like, and their best time will be submitted for prize consideration.
