The 2021 New Sarum Brewing 38th Annual Winter Flight 8K/5K and Fun Run will not be held on the historic course beginning at Catawba College this year. Catawba is still supporting the event, but we could not get clearance from the City of Salisbury for traffic control on the usual streets.
The new location for the event will be headquartered at the Millbridge Ruritan Building at 490 Sloan Road, Mt. Ulla (28125), just across from Sloan Park and about eight miles from Salisbury. All the races will use an especially beautiful and scenic rural course, similar to the Santa Run 5K held each December. Participants will pass the historic Kerr Mill, built in 1824, and farmland that has been in the same dairy family for many generations.
All the races again benefit the wonderful work done by Rowan Helping Ministries in Salisbury. The course location has changed, but the quality of the event has not. Meredith Abramson’s hoodie is ready to go, and she has hit another home run. We will have the latest in technology again at the start and finish, wonderful refreshments, fantastic awards, and more.
Statement from RHM Director, Kyna Grubb - Salisbury Rowan Runners is an amazing partner of Rowan Helping Ministries. This year has been about protocols, partnerships, prayers, and pivoting. Planning for Winter Flight and how our partners have re-imaged and overcome barriers to ensure a fun and safe run has all of these components. Winter Flight will provide much needed funds to our agency and give our community a healthy, fun, and safe opportunity to participate in this longstanding tradtion. At every turn, SRR shows up to keep us moving forward. From stepping in to prepare and serve meals in Jeannie’s Kitchen to ensuring our Runs are successful, SRR are a blessing to Rowan Helping Ministries.

Please save this link for race results: Race Day Results. In lieu of a finish-line kiosk (due to Covid precautions), 8K & 5K race results will be updated at this link throughout the duration of the races. Full results will be transferred to RunSignUp at the conclusion of the event.
Please remember that all walkers should be registered in the 5K. No walkers are allowed in the 8K due to a strict time limit of 90 minutes. We must stay on time for road openings, fire department release and timely awards ceremonies. Thank you for your cooperation.
On Sunday, January, 17, race-day check-in/packet pick up and race-day registration ($35) begins at 12:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the Millbridge Ruritan Building - 490 Sloan Rd., Mt. Ulla, NC 28125.
** Please note that masks are required inside the Ruritan Building.** Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter (all current NC Covid guidelines are in effect throughout this event – see below for further details). We greatly appreciate the Ruritans and the use of their building!
Please plan an early arrival at the race location (before 1:30 p.m.) to allow ample time for parking and check-in. The fun run is scheduled for 1:30 pm, and Sloan Road will be closed to traffic at that time to ensure the safety of those in the fun run.
Parking will be limited at the Ruritan Building, but there are multiple parking lots (with restrooms) across the road at Sloan Park. Two parking lots are located by taking the first road to the left after entering the park and another by driving straight after entering the park. Restrooms are also located at the Ruritan Building as well as port-a-johns on site. If it is possible for you to carpool with someone, please do so.
For everyone’s safety, the race will start in waves/corrals of 50 or less runners three minutes apart beginning at 2:00 p.m. Your wave/corral number will be listed on your race bib. A list will also be posted here on RunSignUp and at Salisbury Rowan Runners by Sunday morning. 8k runners will be released first according to age groups followed by 5k runners according to age groups. Runners must run in their assigned wave to avoid disqualification.
The certified 8k course map is attached below. The 5k course will use part of this same 8k route (will not use Sloan Park, Kerr Mill, or the Lyerly extension). Both races are run on pavement and use the same starting and finish lines.
