A MESSAGE TO PARTICIPANTS IN THE 2O26 GOVERNOR’S CUP ROAD RACE

                  We had a wonderful day and a great turnout for the 2026 Governor’s Cup Road Race. Unfortunately, the races were affected by a train which crossed the courses and delayed about one-third of the runners in the Half-Marathon and all the participants in the 5K.  New courses were designed for this year’s Gov Cup event, and this action was undertaken to avoid traffic safety concerns associated with the old courses.  In planning the new courses, the Governor’s Cup Event Committee worked closely with the Columbia Police Department.  Also, an application was made to Norfolk Southern Railway to delay their trains until after completion of the races.  Unfortunately, that request was acknowledged but not honored. 

                  The Carolina Marathon Association (CMA) has been conducting road races in Columbia since 1977, and the organization has always prided itself on planning events that meet the needs and highest expectations of the running community.  Regrettably that goal was not attained this year.  The 2027 Governor’s Cup Road Race is scheduled for April 9-10, and the courses will be modified to avoid any risk of interference by a train.  As an expression of appreciation to 2026 registrants, a special $25 registration rate will be available for the 2027 Half-Marathon and 5K.  This registration fee will be available between April 20 and May 31.
