ACHIEVABLE GOALS

Wear comfortable training clothes and good running shoes for complimentary Sunday workouts at Culver City High School, Nov. 24, Dec. 8, 22, Jan. 12, 26, and Feb. 9, 23.

"Everyone will have attainable targets for every workout," said Culver City High School girls track coach LaShinda Demus, an Olympic Games gold medalist (2012) in 400m hurdles.

Workouts will encompass goal setting, stretching, warm-ups, light running, jogging, and cool-downs, said coach David Winslow, a legacy Screenland 5K runner and multiple age group marathon winner.

Personal trainer Craig Schoenbaum said the workouts are designed to improve strength, flexibility, and stamina.

"Progress will vary, with some advancing quickly and others gradually, and that's fine," Schoenbaum said.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

Place images or sketches and motivational words on a board representing how you envision yourself passing the Screenland 5K finish line, recommends former Screenland 5K trainer Kirsten Bell.  "Visualize your goal and stay focused on your objectives," Bell said.

As you embark on the joyous journey towards glory and gold in the Screenland 5K, take it slow and heed your body's signals to benefit your physical and mental well-being," said race trainer David Winslow.

"Forget the rule book and the pressure. Tailor a plan that matches your fitness level," Olympian LaShinda Demus said.

Fellow runners can keep you accountable. Train with the Leggers and mentor John Flynn. Join the Culver City Running Club for their Thursday evening jogs, led by Ed Dorio and Peg Rainey.  Depending on the weather, keep cool or warm and ensure visibility with reflective gear or lights in the evening or cloudy mornings, says David Winslow.

Embrace cross-training just like the professionals. Work out at local health clubs. Swim at municipal, condo or club pools. Bicycle with Culver City Councilman Freddy Puza on his monthly rides.

"As a flat, fun, and family-oriented hometown event around the studios, the Screenland 5K is an easy entry to an active lifestyle. Our sessions develop camaraderie and great health.  We're not here to set world records," said Winslow.

TEAM UP & TRAIN

If you've joined or formed a Screenland 5K race team, why not invite your teammates to a free training session? Training together will help you achieve a common goal. Additionally, your team can fundraise, raise awareness for a cause, and even dress in glitz and glamour for a chance to win prizes in the costume contest.
