Our Mission
The Need:
- In the Schertz Cibolo Universal City (SCUC) ISD area over 4,000 children face food insecurity - not having consistent access to enough food to eat. While children are invited to free summer meal programs in Converse and New Braunfels public transportation is not available in the SCUC area so most children don't have access to the services.
- Children that are not reading at grade level by the third grade start to fall behind in other subjects and are four times more likely to drop out of school.
- Youth and teens are susceptible to a number of risky and detrimental behaviors including drinking, drugs, unhealthy relationships and depression
How we help:
- Provide 50 pound packages to up to 200 families in need twice a year as school breaks begin
- Summer Reading Mentor program where teens mentor younger children to improve their reading, comprehension and critical thinking skills
- FREE, nutritious lunches for children and their parents Fridays during the summer
- Meaningful volunteer opportunities for teens - studies show teens that volunteer have higher self-esteem, earn higher grades, lower drop-out rates and are less likely to engage in risky behavior.
Food Giveaways - teen volunteers providing over 10,000 pounds of food to local families
