FAQs - Start Line & On-Course

Can I run with headphones?

Yes – but please be careful doing so. Be sure that you are able to hear your surroundings and you are able to listen for instructions from police and other race personnel.

Instead of running, can I walk the half marathon, 10K run, or 5K run?

The course closes on an 18 minute mile. If you were to walk any of these events slower than an 18 minute mile all course support would stop and roads would reopen to traffic. If you plan to walk, we recommend you register for the 5K walk.

What kinds of fluids are on the course?

Due to COVID-19, our water stops will not have any open cups. Instead, you’ll find small bottles of water that you will need to open yourself. There will be one stop on the half marathon course that also has small bottles of Gatorade. When our 2021 course maps are posted they will include the location of all water stops. Both bottled water and Gatorade will be available for all participants at the finish.

Where can I find bathrooms?

Port-a-Potties will be available in the South Bend Cubs Performance Center parking lot and near various water stops.  When our 2021 course maps are posted they will include the location of all bathrooms.

Where can I wash or sanitize my hands?

Handwashing and sanitizing stations will be available throughout the start/finish area and at each water stop along the course. Please use them frequently!

Where should the bib be placed?

On your front side, on the torso area.

Do I need to wear my Sunburst race shirt?

No – you certainly can and many do, but you are free to run in whatever you feel most comfortable in.

Will there be photography on the course?

Yes – be prepared to smile for the GameFace Media photographers! There will be several of them along the course. You will receive an email a few days after the race with a link to your free photos.

Will you have gear check available?

No – due to both declining interest and COVID-19 we will not offer gear check this year.

Where can I find medical and first aid help?

Michiana Bike Patrol will be on the course with first-aid needs (look for individuals on bikes wearing red vests). A full medical tent will be available at the finish.

What happens if I’m on the course and the race is cancelled due to severe weather?

If the race is cancelled (“black flagged”) report to the nearest water stop. Shuttles will head to each water stop to pick up runners and take them back to either Four Winds Field or Notre Dame. All shuttles will be stocked with disposable face masks and all participants will be required to wear a mask – – either their own or one that is provided to them. Refusal to wear a mask (or wear it properly, over the mouth and nose) will forfeit the opportunity to ride on the shuttle.

Where can I find course maps?

When they are ready, course maps will be available on line and will be posted on large easels at Packet Pickup and the start.

Where is the start line?

All races begin at Four Winds Field, home of the South Bend Cubs, near the Performance Center, located at: 525 S. Lafayette Blvd., South Bend, IN  46601

What time do the races begin?

Due to COVID-19 and the necessity to practice social distancing, there’s a high likelihood that we will have specific start time windows for each race.  As race day approaches, we will be better equipped to make those final decisions – please stayed tuned!  For now, start times are as follows:

Half Marathon  @ 7:00am (if a window is needed, 7:00am-7:30am)
10K Run @ 7:45am (if a window is needed, 7:45am-8:15am)
5K Run @ 8:30am (if a window is needed, 8:30am-9:00am)
5K Fitness Walk @ 9:15am (if a window is needed, 9:15am-9:45am)
The start line opens at 7:00am and the finish line closes at 11:30am.

In thinking about your plan for arrival and starting your race, please allow ample extra time for parking, entrance into runner only areas, use of restrooms, etc.

Where should I park on race morning?

Parking will be available in the Four Winds lots, excluding the Performance Center lot. Should parking be full, open downtown garages and spaces may be utilized at the appropriate fees.

How early should I arrive?

We recommend arriving a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the start of your race if you have picked up your packet/bib prior to race morning. Should you need to pick up your packet, use the restroom, switch to a different event, etc. – definitely allow extra time.

Are you having pacers again this year?

TBD – we will make that decision in the near future.
