Do you love spending time in solitude out of doors? Do you enjoy backcountry adventures and helping others have a good experience on the land? Then this is the opportunity for you! Big Sur Land Trust is seeking volunteers to help monitor three trail courses in Carmel Valley. These courses will be open on May 10 from 6:30am to 3:30pm for registered participants to run during their chosen time slot.

Course monitors are stationed out on the land within the 6:30am to 3:30pm timeframe for single-day or half-day time commitments. An orientation will be provided over Zoom the week before. Course monitors will arrive up to an hour before their shift for a day-of orientation and transport or hiking onto the trails, depending on assignment. Course monitors are responsible for radio communications along the lengths of the courses, helping keep runners on the correct path during their race, and helping our team address issues that might come up during the event. This is a special opportunity to immerse yourself in natural areas usually closed to the public while helping make these incredible race courses a success!

Qualified volunteers are comfortable spending extended time in backcountry wilderness areas and can easily hike 4+ miles on hilly terrain if asked. First aid/CPR or WFR certification and/or AED training is a plus. Course volunteers are encouraged to consider volunteering for whole-day shifts. Course volunteers who volunteer for half-day shifts will be more likely to be placed on the Fun Run course. Volunteers will be gifted a free Big Sur Land Trust poster of their choosing. Snacks, water, and coffee will also be offered prior to leaving and returning from shifts. Volunteers will be required to prepare all other supplies and equipment they may wish to have in the field (e.g., packed lunch, water, hat, hiking shoes, camping/backpacking chair if desired...)

Are you an avid trail runner? Do you feel comfortable running solo over long distances and hilly terrain? Are you passionate about leave-no-trace principles? Then this is the opportunity for you! Big Sur Land Trust is seeking volunteers to sweep four in-person trail courses in Carmel Valley that overlap each other. These courses will be open on May 10 from 12:30am to 4:30pm for registered participants to run during their chosen time slot.

Course sweeps are given four hours to sweep between 13-15 miles of trail within the 12:30pm to 4:30pm timeframe. Qualified volunteers are comfortable spending extended time in backcountry wilderness areas, are self-sufficient runners (i.e., who run prepared with their own hydration, nutrition, etc.), and will have capacity to run 15+ miles on hilly terrain by April 1 should it become necessary. Course Sweep volunteers will be gifted their choice of a Big Sur Land Trust poster. Snacks, water, and coffee will also be offered prior to leaving and returning from shifts. Volunteers will be required to prepare all other supplies and equipment they may wish to have in the field (e.g., appropriate trail running footwear, any preferred nutrition, water, hat...).
