You must be 18 or older to volunteer for this task.

Details

Provide on-course direction for participants and use your voice to cheer them on and let them know you are glad that it is them and not you toughing it out over the Mayfaire 5k. Your official volunteer shirt means you are in charge and are one of many people who have selflessly volunteered to make the race happen. Don't be surprised if a racer huffing and puffing past you takes time to say thanks, because every racer understands and appreciates the importance of having a safe and accurate race course - made possible by having awesome course monitors.

Duties include a proper understanding of the course, being able to stop pedestrian and/or traffic while runners cross. Keep runners on the course. May have to stand for a long time, as you'll be in position until the street is clear of runners and reopened by the police. Return to the finish area to assist with the finish line tear down.

Course Sweeper

You must be 18 or older to volunteer for this task.

Details

No one ever wants to be last. But someone always is – the sweeper. Volunteers are an integral part of any race, and one of the most important roles is that of the sweeper. These are the people who follow the last racer. Their job is multi-faceted and super important. And super rewarding. Not only do you help ensure the safety of the racers, but you get to share in the experience and play a part in helping people do something they weren’t sure they could do!

Sweepers can help ensure injured racers receive proper care in a timely manner. The sweepers should carry some sort of communication device (cell phone with the race director's and volunteer coordinator's numbers). Please call 911 for life-threatening emergencies before calling race personnel. It is important that you are familiar with the course and have a good idea where you are on the course at all times. In case of an emergency, the sweeper should stay with the injured runner and wait for help, or try to reach the nearest aid station together.

Sweepers arriving at an aid station is the signal to those volunteers that they can shut down and leave. This is also true for the finish line; the sweepers’ arrival indicates that all runners are in BUT the sweeper should not release course monitors on side streets because the entire street needs to wait to reopen until all runners are clear.

Another aspect to sweeping is to motivate and reassure the last runner(s). Every runner is different so when coming up on the last racer, talk with them. Ask them whether or not they need company and how they are feeling. Some runners do not want the sweepers running right behind them because it makes them feel rushed and self-conscious. In that case, give them space. Other times, they are having a hard day and need the company. In those situations, feel free to chat with them. If the final runners are getting close to a time cut-off, you can make them aware and let them know what kind of pace/effort is required to avoid a DNF. Again, be familiar with the course. Runners often ask you how far the next aid station is or details on the course and they appreciate it when you have the answers.

Great for Groups! Be the first to greet the runners when they finish their journey as they cross the finish line. We need your help in the following areas:

Medals: Reward the runners by giving them their hard-earned medal. Duties include unwrapping medals and organizing on tables

Water distribution: Hand weary runners cups of water. Duties include setting up & restocking cups & filling with water.

Crowd Control: The runners are happy to be done. Some are waiting for their friends/family to cross. But we need to make sure everyone can get through so we don't have a back-up of runners waiting to cross the finish line. Duties include keeping runners moving efficiently through the chute, directing runners to the post-race area where they can wait for loved ones, grab a snack and relax.

Volunteers #makeithappen and while they don't earn a finisher medal for their effort they are the heart & soul of every event creating an exciting, safe, and rewarding experience for our participants.

With so many volunteers and so many roles/responsibilities, each race needs a coordinator to help get all the of who, what, where, when, why questions about a race answered and get everyone to the right spot on time.

If you are a take-charge individual and love being part of a project from start to finish, this is the role for you! Duties include working closely with the race planning committee and race director, communicating with the volunteers, ensuring information is dispersed in a timely manner, and ensuring all volunteers check-in, show up at their assigned location on time, and check out for each shift.

Volunteer coordinators are required to complete the Safe Sport Act Training, and attend race planning committee meetings as necessary for the race they are coordinating.
