Aid Station Captain

At least 6 more volunteers needed.

Details

It's a big job, but if you're experienced in the ways of trail racing and have the leadership skills to direct a team of fellow volunteers in a runner-focused effort, it might be for you. You'll be responsible for everything that happens at your station, and we expect you to take charge of it, run it smoothly, and be ready to react to whatever challenges arise (all while having a rewarding time with good people in a beautiful place).

Location

There are six aid stations on the course and you will be assigned to one.

Registration/Check-In Volunteer

At least 4 more volunteers needed.

Details

These volunteers help with registration and check-in on race day to make sure the experience is smooth and efficient for the participants.

Location

Race headquarters at the pavilion across from the Blue Knob Clubhouse.

General Volunteer Pool

At least 5 more volunteers needed.

Details

Are you completely flexible, a "surprise me" person who's willing to step into whatever gap appears? If so, volunteer here (and if you have some preferences or parameters, tell us in the questions that follow in the volunteer form).

Medical Coordinator High Priority

At least 1 more volunteer needed.

Details

If you're a certified medical professional - physician, physician assistant, nurse, paramedic, podiatrist, physical or occupational therapist, etc. - we need you! Trail runners are generally a healthy bunch, but this is a tough race on difficult terrain, and things happen. Whether you work at an aid station or at race base, you'll assess medical situations, provide athletic medical support to help keep runners moving onward, and help them recover when they are done. And if there's an emergency, you'll be there to provide immediate support/triage, and communicate with EMS as needed.

The Course

Course Sweeper High Priority

At least 6 more volunteers needed.

Details

Sweeping is a rewarding job because you get to spend time on your feet while volunteering, and you get to see the course from a different perspective. It can also be challenging because your speed is determined by the last runners’ speed, and you never know how fast or slowly you will be going. Don’t expect to be running at your pace while you are sweeping as you will often walk or match the pace of the last runner. Another challenging part of sweeping is closing the gap between you and the last runner. For example, if the last runner gets cut off at an aid station, you have to pick up the pace so you can get behind the next runner as soon as possible.

Location

Sections will be divided based on the number of volunteers and how many miles volunteers would like to sweep.

Course Proofer

At least 5 more volunteers needed.

Details

Run a section of the race route on race morning ahead of the lead runners to ensure that markers are in place and the trail is clear. If you are a strong and experienced trail runner who can get out early, stay in front of the lead runners, and who is familiar enough with the course to recognize and fix any problems you encounter, you're ideal for this job. You'll carry marking ribbon and a map, and you'll be the final link in our course preparation process - insurance against last-minute course disasters.

Location

Sections will be divided based on the number of volunteers and how many miles volunteers would like to proof.

Course Cleaner

At least 4 more volunteers needed.

Details

The race isn't really over until the last flag is pulled and the last accidentally-dropped top of a gel pack is picked up from the trail. This is a great opportunity to get out on the race course on Sunday while it's still marked, and see the beauty of the area without the pressure of racing. You'll be removing all the race markers and any debris (our runners are ultra-conscientious, but not perfect), making it look like it never happened.

Location

Sections will be divided based on the number of volunteers and how many miles volunteers would like to clean. Sections of the course on state park property take first priority.

Trail Marshal

At least 8 more volunteers needed.

Details

Nothing is more frustrating to our participants is getting misdirected on the course. Trail Marshals are assigned on parts of the course that can be confusing on which way to go and/or where safety is paramount like where the course crosses a publicly open road. We require individuals to be "situationally and directionally aware" in order to keep participants on track.

Location

Assignment locations will be divided based on the number of volunteers.

Course Flagger

At least 1 more volunteer needed.

Details

Allegheny Trailrunners has a reputation on having well-marked courses. In the days prior to the race, course flaggers make sure the course is marked to the standard we have set to ensure that runners are confident they are on the right path.

Location

Assignment locations will be divided based on the number of volunteers.
