After several lackluster attempts at getting back into running after Blaise and Desi were born, I'm finally committing to baby steps and signing up for the Sunburst 5K, supporting Beacon Children's Hospital.
For those of you who don't know, our youngest son was born last September and diagnosed shortly after birth with trisomy 13. Beacon Children's is where Carlo has been receiving his inpatient, and much of his outpatient treatment since returning from Indianapolis in February, and we've been blown away by the quality of the care he's received. Sadly, so many hospitals kick kids like Carlo to the curb solely on the basis of their trisomy diagnosis and categorically deny them medical treatment. The team at Memorial has welcomed Carlo as a patient, without regard to his diagnosis, and given him the same treatment they give to any typically developing child. We've been delighted to find a hometown hospital that's actually more progressive than many of the big referral centers, and can provide complex care in a beautiful facility, minutes away from our house.
