Story

One Unique Recovery House (OUR House) is a WVARR-certified transitional living option for individuals recovering from substance use disorder. Dedicated to providing individuals with the tools they need to gain long-term sustainable recovery as well as everyday skills needed to be self-sufficient after their stay with our program.

Founded by volunteers in 2020, OUR House originally targeted its services to adult females coming out of correctional institutions and substance use treatment facilities because they were in the most need of our services. These women have nowhere else to turn to due to factors such as recent incarceration, abusive relationships, and alcohol and drug dependencies. They are in need of transitional living and empowerment to become self-sufficient.

OUR House recently discovered that men are facing similar difficulties and a massive lack of certified housing options not only within our community but within our entire region. To help more people on their recovery journey, OUR House expanded to a second house for men. The community saw the prevalent need for recovery housing, and their support has been overwhelming: OUR House men’s location was established solely by volunteers and donations in just 26 days.

Today, OUR House offers in-house services and referrals to community-based services such as recovery programs and meetings, job placement assistance, life skills trainings, transportation, social and recreational activities, recovery coaching, professional counseling services, and drug and alcohol testing.

OUR House Outreach was developed in 2025 in order to better assist and educate our community. As a naloxone distributing organization, we are hosted by many community partners with organized community events as well as “pop-up events” throughout Upshur and surrounding counties. This initiative was created after multiple overdoses in ours and surrounding counties. Community organizations and leaders reached out to us for help and a better understanding of how they can assist. Thus OUR House Outreach was born. These outreach opportunities allow us to better connect with community members of all backgrounds at a variety of locations, often underserved locations. Our goal is to not only to distribute and train the community on naloxone but on the facts of recovery. We aim to reduce the stigma around naloxone and recovery as a whole.
