Life often puts us into some kind of prison, limiting our expectations and beliefs. So imagine what it’s like for those who have served their time as they re-enter society; full of prejudiced perceptions that are isolating and dehumanizing. With a return-to-prison rate of over 30%, the odds are not good for the 7 million Americans in our prisons, on probation or on parole. You can’t start a new life when you’re locked in your old one.
But when one person sees your potential, you see hope. When someone opens a new door, you jump through it. When someone gives you a second chance, you don’t waste it.
These humanizing connections have a meaningful impact on both sides. For nearly a decade, Defy graduates have been defying the odds, with less than 10% returning to prison.
That’s because our innovative programs and generous supporters help unlock their purpose, allowing them to get jobs, start businesses, feel good about themselves, and be better partners and parents. It’s only when people see the good in one another that you can break the cycle and improve the system.
