Running When the Air Quality is Questionable

Without getting too deep into the science, when you are getting ready to run a race, the expectation is that you will exert yourself at a higher level than when you train. Mixing poor air quality with exerting yourself can compound the health problems associated exercise.

The organizers of the Res Run monitor the air quality leading up to our event date.  Over the last several years, California has battled smoke from wildfires that have caused the air quality to getting close to dangerous levels.  If the levels ever go too dangerous for healthy people, we would, most likely cancel or postpone the event.  We generally draw that line at an index of 150+.

You can track the air quality leading up to race day.  Purpleair.com gives us the most accurate understanding of air quality on race day.  There are several purple Air sensors along our race routes.  They also update the readings from their sensors often.

How does the AQI (Air Quality Index) work?

Think of the AQI as a yardstick that runs from 0 to 500. The higher the AQI value, the greater the level of air pollution and the greater the health concern. For example, an AQI value of 50 or below represents good air quality, while an AQI value over 300 represents hazardous air quality.

Here is how AQI is measured.  The numbers represent ozone and particle pollution.
